So the other day, I was over at a friend's house, and noticed he had a PS1 sitting un-connected beside his PS2. I asked if I could borrow it, mainly out of curiosity, and he said I could have it.
My local EB has a pretty good PS1 selection, so what games should I be on the lookout for.
Note: Do NOT say Final Fantasy. I hate that series.
Alundra comes to mind, along with Monster Rancher. Parappa the Rapper, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.. I would say Final Fantasy Tactics too, but..
Oh, also, I'd list what games he already had, but it's pretty much just a bunch of racing games, sports games, and Sim Themepark (and Twisted Metal 4, but I don't like it that much. I recall really enjoying TM 1 and 2 years ago. Are they any good?)
Ape Escape is the most awesomest platfomer ever. You run across huge levels with a radar dish and net trapping apes. Great boss battles. Great mini games. Great replay value. It's just great. Get it now. You will not regret it.
Everyone goes on about FF: Tactics but noone has ever even HEARD of Vanguard bandits. It's a fabulous mech based Tactical RPG. It's got a great battle system, branching story paths with different endings and an Fabulous cast of characters. If you can get ahold of this one, do so.
If you like Bomber Man you may get a kick out of Trap Gunner. It's a game similar to bomber man only they've given the gameplay a serious upgrade. Several different kinds of weapons, including mines, and bombs with a remote detonator, among other things.
Wild 9 needs no introduction.
Brave Fencer Musashi is pure concentrated awsome. If you've ever played it you'll realize what a disapointment Threads of fate was.
I'd also highly recommend the Resident Evil games (particularly RE2), the Dino Crisis games (particularly DC2), Silent Hill, Syphon Filter, the Oddworld series, Ape Escape and the Crash Bandicoot series (though I don't know how well it's aged).
And if you can find a copy for a decent price, pick up Suikoden II. One of the best JRPG's I've ever played.
I heard Vagrant Story is honestly one of the best games ever made
true?
To be honest, I've got it and don't really see the appeal of it. Then again, I've heard people say it's fucking awesome once you get a handle on the item creation.
Bushido Blade: Fighting game with 1-hit kills. Very fun, once you get the hang of it. Hated 2, though.
You should be able to get Grind Session cheap. I liked it better than Tony Hawk.
Mobile Light Force has the honor of having one of the worst covers in existance, but the game is a good Japanese shooter.
The Spiro series is rather on the easy side, but (speaking from experience) it is perfect for "I just got my wisdom teeth removed, and don't want to do *anything* for the next 48 hours". If you don't have anything in that category, pick up a game or two for emergencies...
The crash series seems to have aged well enough, though the first one has rather basic gameplay. (The hardest in the series, though.)
I too really dislike Final Fantasy, but I enjoyed FFTactics. Honestly, it's nothing like Final Fantasy. Consider it.
Valkyrie Profile is a great game. I might just go play through it again starting right now. It's got an amazing story and pretty good gameplay (VP2 has way better gameplay, but VP1 is endearing in its own way).
Vagrant Story is indeed great. Great story, characters, gameplay. I didn't learn much about the item creation system but I still completed 3 playthroughs. Learn how to do short chains and keep a few weapons around for different enemy types. Use affinity spells. Do that and keep your risk low, and you'll be more than fine. Then dive into the item creation and stuff if you want more.
A lot of people enjoy Star Ocean: The Second Story. It's not my kind of game but you might want to look into it.
Abe's Odysee
Crash Bandicoot Games (the original trilogy was, believe it or not, very good)
Silent Hill-still the scariest game ever.
MGS1
SotN
Ape Escape
RE2
Xenogears
Tomba!
I can help you out, here are some of my favorites. most of which seem to go into unknown territory with a lot of people, but whatever.
For starters Rollcage: A really awesome racing game that's fast, and has you flying around on walls in cars that look like those old RC cars that can flip over. You can find it cheap almost anywhere, and I advise picking it up. the soundtrack is equally as good, and you can throw it on your PC.
Project Overkill: An isometric third person shooter, you have a group of 4 mercenaries that you take on missions to grab something, escort someone, or kill something. Mostly kill something, it's really violent, and very fun. Also probably very cheap to pick up if you find it.
some other mentions would be Tobal No.1 a very fun 3D fighting game from Squaresoft, Blood omen: Legacy of Kain, Soul Reaver. If I think of anymore I'll throw them out there.
A cool little dragon-fighter raising sim. The combat is odd. You input your two next turns blind (you do not know what the enemy dragon will do) and then the next two turns play out. Rinse, repeat. A lot of it is managing your dragons who age and die over time. I thought it was pretty fun.
Valkyrie Profile, Star Ocean 2, and Legend of Dragoon. The holy trinity of PS1 RPGs. I'd also throw in Chrono Cross and Legend of Mana too. Eternal Eyes isn't that good, but it's a cheap, fun tactics/monster raising game. For wacky fun, get Rising Zan : Samurai Gunman.
The first two Oddworld games
Xenogears
Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross
I second the nomination of Wild 9
Spider-man (not the movie games)
Parasite Eve (only #1)
-edit-
Oh shit, almost forgot.
Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver

The harder the rain, honey, the sweeter the sun.
In Tecmo's Deception, the player takes the role of a man wrongfully accused and unjustly sentenced to execution who pleads to the Devil for help. The Devil provides, and soon the player is 'saved' and used to guard a very evil and forboding mansion that manages to attract adventurers, people after the player himself, and those who wish to stop whatever nefarious deed lies within. The player defends this fiendish abode with a number of horrific traps used to slay or capture. Captured people are chopped up and combined to make monsters which are also used to fight off intruders, although you're limited to one monster in the mansion at a time--save yourself. It's really fucking fun, and I can't find my disc and it makes me really sad. I never got around to the sequels though.
Lots of other good suggestions in here.

The entire Deception trilogy. Kagero(II) is the most known, but III(Dark Delusion) is my favorite.
It's the closest thing to a reenvisioning of Night Trap you'll ever see. Maintain a castle, set traps, kill stupid intruders/innocents, and harvest their souls to build more traps and resurrect Lucifer(only in the original, that).
I can't believe I was actually beaten to this.
piL, :^:. You indeed rock.
As a random addition, since Working Designs are always good, if you're into light gun games, track down Elemental Gearbolt. It's the only reason I keep my Guncon.
Syphon Filter was a fun time. Metal Gear Solid. Deception II. Ape Escape.
A little off topic. I just started Final Fantasy Tactics yesterday for PS1 (bought it as a Greatest Hit years back). Is is worth leveling up my entire party or should I just level up the guys I plan on using? I mean right now I only get like 5 guys per battle, but I don't know if I'll need, say, 20 guys later on.

It's good to have a well-rounded party in any SRPG, especially FFT. It's more fun to switch up the strategy.
And later on, you'll need all the options you can get.
Because it's without a doubt the greatest arcade racer of all time.
Perfect handling, perfect design, perfect balance. Fantastic graphics, the greatest licensed soundtrack ever (produced by Sasha, and featuring tracks by the Propellerheads and Chemical Brothers amongst others.). A great muiltiplayer mode. Some fantastic innovations on an already very sturdy core.
This game is as close to perfect as a game possibly can be, and I will hear no word otherwise.
Silent Bomber is fucking superb, my most favourite PS1 game ever. Its sort of a shooter only your character doesn't have a gun who lock onto enemies and them fire bombs that stick onto them a explode after a couple of seconds. The explosive carnage is still impressive today, its challenging and the gameplay has endured incredibly well.

Intelligence Qube.
That's all I got for now.
I second Alundra. It's like the Zelda I'd always wanted, in that the puzzles were actually really tough.
I'd also highly recommend the Resident Evil games (particularly RE2), the Dino Crisis games (particularly DC2), Silent Hill, Syphon Filter, the Oddworld series, Ape Escape and the Crash Bandicoot series (though I don't know how well it's aged).

Front Mission 3 is good if you can find it, Chrono Cross was another good RPG.
I'm a Tempest nut so I have Tempest X as well.
In my opinion, the finest buried treasure of all time.
Don't let anybody tell you different.

Also, the first Wild Arms. I can't remember having that much fun with an RPG since.

I hate you people for not mentioning it. And I hate you people who don't like this game.
Because, Fear Effect. 1 and 2.
You can get it dirt cheap and it's a fun little platformer.
No one really likes Legend of Dragoon. They just really dislike themselves.
These.
Also, I can't recommend Bushido Blade highly enough. Especially multiplayer.
Edit: Ah, beated. Well, you should get it. Really.
