Maybe just a representation of their popular game franchises? I mean you've got WarCraft and StarCraft on there, why not include Diablo?

I don't know, it's obvious why they put StarCraft in it and the Draenei and the Blood Elf could mean that they announce a new WoW Add-On. Maybe there will be a big surprise, who knows.

The Diablo team is the one that left Blizzard (I think), so that seems less likely to me.

Yeah, changed the franchise name to the Seattle Badgers too.

I just looked it up, and yeah the team behind Diablo, Blizzard North, left and are now working on Hellgate London.

When asked for comment Bill Roper cited conflicts with Vivendi Universal as his reason for leaving.

Too bad for blizz, that was a great team
still, I suppose they still have the rights to the Diablo franchise, right?
so maybe they will eventually make a new one

Yeah there were apparently a lot of people who though the announcement on the 19th was going to be Diablo 3 and not SCII because it would've been a timely way to compete with Hellgate. I personally think the loss of the team will delay another Diablo sequel while they concentrate on their other franchises, and apparently they've been working on Starcraft for a couple years now so maybe I'm right. But yeah, I imagine they'll continue the franchise sometime in the indeterminate future. There's no reason not to.

I never liked Diablo. It seemed oversimplified from the stat-based games that were already out. Plus the clickclickclickclickclick thing was annoying.

You don't have to clickclickclickclickclickclickclick. You can click and hold too.

So, 1up seems pretty serious about this release date. I wonder where they got it, seeing as how Blizzard is pretty adamant about the whole "when it's ready" thing.

That sounds more like when the beta would be ready rather than the actual game. And the beta usually goes for like 3-6 months.

If you're right that would be incredible. That would mean we could see it on shelves in early '08. I just don't understand where they get that specific day when Blizzard insists they don't have a timetable. Would they just make up a date and throw it on there to get people excited for no reason?

Funny thing is, 1up.com has a video preview of Starcraft II hosted by two of their staff members, in which they both theorize that the game probably won't be out until at least '09. Yet, their website says November? If you're gonna lie, at least be consistent.

Sadly this sounds much more accurate.

The game's only been announced, but it did seem to me they got a good portion of the gameplay done. There's still the rest of the terran/zerg units, gameplay balance, and then campaigns though.

    And then the beta.

Oh they're done with a lot more than they've shown. During the Q&A they said they've already played fully functioning multiplayer with all three races, but are now working on balance issues before they do the single player campaigns, which they always do last. They've been working on the goddamn game for close to four years now so they damn well better, anyway. To only have one race done after all that time would be ridiculous. I think they're just releasing information at a trickle for marketing reasons.

You dudes know that game sites setting an arbitrary date is nothing new, right? Even EBstop does it, if for no other reason than to collect preorders.

Ahh, I read somewhere that they had thrown all this together in the past month or two somehow.

I guess that would be what some call a "lie".

You can find video coverage of the dev team Q&A here and here.

In case you don't feel like watching the whole thing, this is from a Gamespot article:
And even though the game has apparently been in development since 2003, shortly after Blizzard shipped the Frozen Throne expansion pack for Warcraft III--and even though the game is, according to Blizzard, already playable in multiplayer with all three factions--Starcraft II will be released "when it's ready." As president Mike Morhaime stated, Blizzard doesn't "really have a budget; [the studio will] spend as much time and resources as [it needs] to make this game great."

Yeah this makes sense, I suppose. It just seems a dumb way to attract site traffic when you have to have gone to the site to see the content anyway, unless people are linking to it like "hur hur i no wen it cums out see" And it's not as though you can preorder games from this particular site. Although they do have a "buy this game on Amazon" link, so actually that's probably it.

Don't you love it when you have realizations mid-sentence?

Well the first video prove my point. They wanted to announce a game fully playable for once. I dont think they will be delaying it.

    I'm all for that idea.

I would rather have a game announced when I can actually get it soon.
