Travelling to France-Cell Phone?

I'm travelling to Grenoble, France for a month, and my parents think I should have a cell phone in case of emergency. It's pretty expensive to get one through my carrier (Verizon), and I know there are a ton of places to rent phones from, so I was wondering if anybody had any personal experience with doing so. I saw one website that basically costs $150 for a month, $0.94 per minute for outgoing and free incoming calls. Is that probably going to be about the best I can do? If it really is free incoming calls, with no catch, that seems a little too good to be true.
