Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!
Like all electronic devices my pc decides to act up days after the warranty expires. My laptop starts to boot up and before the OS(windows xp) loads it goes to a black screen and makes a loud beeping sound. Anyone have any ideas to what it might be? I am hoping it is as simple as a bad hdd but with my luck I expect the worse.
I'm not sure that this is what is happening to you, but when my laptop did that my hard drive died. Others on this board may have a better idea than me though.
Usually the motherboard can make beeping noises. Is there any pattern in the beeps? Whether or not your warranty is expired (how long did you have this?), you should phone up the helpdesk.
Right. One of the first things that a computer does when it starts up is called POST, or Power On Self Test. With most computers, they'll beep once if everything is okay. Are these beeps occurring at the same time as that normal beep? Is anything displaying on screen before the computer beeps?
If it is occurring during POST, the sequence and style of beeps and what they indicate is determined mainly by manufacturer, Phoenix and Award being two primary ones. If you can, tell us where you got the computer, what brand it is, etc. If you can tell us who made the motherboard, that would be great, though I imagine you might not know that unless you put the computer together yourself.
By the way, this is my first post. Did I do okay?
