I know it was only tangental, but please, let's not bring up Sufjan in this thread.

    Who's Sufjan?
Don't worry about it, for real. He's a dick who doesn't deserve his fame.

    If you're still curious, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sufjan_stevens

Seriously, what's your problem? Sufjan makes good music, Illinois in particular, and there's nothing in the wikipedia entry about him being a dick. And, even if he was a dick, what does that have anything to do with his music?

Dragonforce? They're ridiculously over-the-top, even for power metal.

That's what I always liked about them. It's their charm.

I'm going to leave it at saying he's reasonably talented, but he's not nearly as good as he thinks he is, and I think he's completely overhyped. I'm not going to say he doesn't deserve to be making records, but he's pretty mediocre for the most part, and he's really pretentious for how mediocre he is. When Of Montreal is pretentious, it doesn't bother me that much because their music is mostly incredible. When Sufjan is pretentious, I want to kick his skinny, overhyped ass.

We are all very lucky to live in a world where there is this much music.

Hahah, hell yes. Discovered them late last year.

Not even their best album, let alone one of the best in power metal. The male vocals were forced, Tarja's vocals lost their operatic charm and became pop mush, the songwriting was generic, and the whole thing in general was over-produced. Century Child was at least twice as good, but Oceanborn is my favorite.

I thought "Wishmaster" was their pinnacle. But that's really like saying you liked the second half of "Oceanborn".

@YosemiteSam: I didn't insta-hate Sufjan, but when I read that he was making 50 concept albums - one for each state - I did kind of look at the monitor like it had shrimp falling out of the back of it.

In any case, I'd probably vote the following as my personal favorite albums:

    Rain Dogs - Tom Waits

    Surfer Rosa - The Pixies

I'd post the cover art, but Surfer Rosa has boobs.

There's always been a struggle deep down in my heart over Rain Dogs and Alice. I usually let Alice win, but they're both amazing albums.

I struggle between Rain Dogs and Swordfishtrombones, personally. Alice is pretty magnificent I agree, but it doesn't have enough up-tempo pieces to be suitable for all moods.

i think that once is their best album, as well. the only real difference in tarja's vocals in it is that she's not always using an "operatic" timbre. her dynamics, range, and everything else that one expects from a classically trained vocalist are still there. it's not even a bad thing. she uses her operatic timbre more sparingly and that provides more variety to already rich vocals. if you hear pop mush, i suspect you might not be listening to vocals all that well, and only looking for her to sound like she's singing in an opera. i think what makes the album, though, is the real orchestra. beats the shit out of synth any day. and the level of production is appropriate when you bear in mind there's an orchestra. it'd sound weird if it were produced with less, i don't know, gloss, i guess.

but yeah, the male vocals are awful.

Yeah exactly, Rain Dogs is the album I put on when I want to do something fun/engaging and Alice is a much more stay in and mellow out kinda thing.

michael hedges' "aerial boundaries," as far as "guitar music" goes, is probably the best. he has everyone beat. reynolds, kottke, pass, king. all of them. putting aside the absurd level of skill it takes to play things like that, his attention to harmony and melody are unparalleled, and everything he does is tasteful, which is notable in a genre where guitarists like to show off.

  • ShoggothShoggoth Registered User
I dunno man, Hedges? If you ask me he is the most boring and overrated of the lot mentioned.

Nightwish, Dragonforce, and Sonata Arctica should never be near a greatest albums discussion. If you're going to choose power metal, where's the Gamma ray? Blind Guardian? So on.

Also, if the over the top part of Dragonforce is what attracts you, there are other bands doing the cheese aspect without being a complete third rate clone of every other European power metal band. Might want to try Powerwolf's new album "Lupus Dei." Vampires and werewolves are truly better subjects.

p.s. Nightwish can be pretty terrible on quite a few songs. "I wish I had an Angel" is definitely of the worst songs that come to mind.

Technically accomplished because they play a sped up version of bands like Rhapsody? No thanks. At least Rhapsody was able to write a small handful of interesting songs. They have the same songwriting problems as those other bands which includes very monotonous drumming and poor lyrics. This wouldn't be as big of a drawback if they could expand their sound a little bit. Being able to play the guitar/keyboard quickly doesn't do much if you can't create something interesting with it. Even more so when most songs sound similar enough to bring about comparisons to the likes of AC/DC and Rhapsody in this area.

blind guardian is, hands down, my favorite band.

shaggoth, i suppose that's a matter of taste and what you're listening for. his biggest problem was that his songs seemed to lack a little in overall construction. it's a little decentralized. but that aside, i still think he's the best of them. yeah, he's not as flashy as tim reynolds, but he has a greater sense and understanding of harmony (i say this as a huge fan of tim reynolds' solo work), and his techinque allowed him to capitalize on that. his songs don't sound as foward moving as, say, leo kottke's songs, but as awesome as kottke is, i think that hedge's melodies are better constructed. mostly it's the lack of solid structure that bothers people.

as far as dragonforce goes, you have to just take them for what they are. i liked sonic firestorm when it came out, but i understand that they're not exactly groundbreaking. basically, they play really really fast solos. the melodies aren't terrible, but they aren't really that interesting either. they're like a rambo movie. when you get the theatre, you know what the fuck's up.

that isn't even true at all

have you seen them play? live they're alright but it's so noisy you can't really tell, but their "bet you can't play this" is the worst thing i've ever seen. i'm not saying they aren't a good band (i like them!) but so many people have them beat for just shredding - even in the 80s.

Violator was okay - I liked it when I was a kid, but my affection for Depeche Mode in general has waned. Johnny Cash's cover of Personal Jesus is pretty great though.

Remain In Light is a pretty great album as well.

Fashion Nugget is a lot of fun, but I don't know that I could place it on a "greatest albums" list.

The Downward Spiral didn't really do it for me, but I guess I kind of preferred Pretty Hate Machine-era Nine Inch Nails.
