Laptop Advice for Girlfriend - Refurbs?

My girlfriend is in the market for a new computer. Her price range is only about $500 currently, which I'm sure I could use to build her a Windows-based PC easily. However, I'm also looking at getting her an Apple, for a number of reasons (the least of which is because I want to have one on hand and try it out before deciding if I want a MacBook Pro). There aren't a lot in that range, though, except for some refurbished iBooks that I'm finding. Does anyone have any tips on refurbished Apples (specifically iBooks) for me? Push comes to shove, I'm sure I could also find a decent Windows-based laptop in that range, but I think it'd still be neat to at least try a Mac.
