Things allowed on a greyhound bus?

TwistedJesterTwistedJester Registered User regular
I know this is super short notice, but I'm going to be taking a greyhound bus tomorrow morning to visit a friend for the weekend and I've never taken one before. I've looked over their prohibited items list, but it's kind of vague. In particular, I use an old time safety razor to shave, and it takes double edged blades. Does anyone know if I'd be allowed to bring a single blade in my carry on? Also, what about an electric hair trimmer? Do they even do anything like screening, metal detectors, etc?

I used to take the Grey Hound all the time, and I never had to go through any sort of screening. As far as I know, they basically don't care what you take on the bus as long as you're not smuggling drugs or giant-ass knives. But I've only ever had to take carry on luggage, so it might be different for stuff you have to put under the bus.

I'm aiming to do carry on only. I only need enough stuff for two days so I'm packing light.

Its not like taking a flight. I've never once had any of my bags inspected when taking a greyhound. I wouldn't worry about anything you want to take.

Yeah, they don't check bags. Just don't take it out and whip it around and you should be fine.

they dont check shit but dont crack open a beer in clear view of the driver like i did once (4 times). they pulled over and made me dump it. sucked because those rides really require booze.

edit: my second gun was pulled on me right outside a greyhound bus stop. stay in the terminal they are traditionally in the worst neighboorhoods in town 100% of the time in any city over 1000.

Yeah, stay inside the stop. I kinda ventured out the front door of Detroit's, but I stayed the hell inside of Chicago's, and not even that was enough to keep people from trying to get money off me.

I remember I was on a bus going from Atlanta to Birmingham. I was trying to sleep, but sleeping while clutching onto my bags for dear life was risky business, and then I started to smell weed. I looked around, didn't see smoke, then turned to the guy next to me and said "You smell that? It smells like weed!" He shrugs and says "No ingles."

At the next stop, five cops storm onto the bus and charge some black guy in the back with dreads, grab him, pin him, and drag him out of the bus while he's screaming his fucking lungs out. Turns out he was smoking weed, and smuggling four ounces in his bags and was a wanted man. Safe to say, I never rode the Greyhound again.

So yeah, you'll be fine, they don't check anything at all. Just get on the bus with a good, healthy fear for your safety.

Thanks a lot of the help guys. Also, the one I'm going to is Erie, and my sisters boyfriend who is from there says the walk from the bus stop to the hotel I'm staying at isn't bad at all. It's less than a mile walk.

Are you saying to stay inside the stops for safety? Or just so you don't get asked for change? I used to live in a city over from Detroit and now Chicago. And have been at the train, and bus stops many times. And never been asked for money inside, only out. But never has my safety been in danger.

Safety. I'm just saying that it didn't keep the low-stakes guys out. Also, I was afraid of missing the next bus.

How the hell can they say you cant take prescription medication?

When i took the greyhound a couple years back from pittsburgh to allegheny college to visit my then girlfriend for the weekend, i had my 3 1/2 inch blade pocket knife and my gerber multi tool on my belt. No one ever told me there were things you couldn't take on the bus. Think i came across some little sign somewhere in the terminal on the trip back that listed shit you cant take. There were no metal detectors and nothing was searched so like everyone else is saying, unless you decide to pull the shit out and wave it around, no one is going to care. Im guessing your gonna have a buddy drop you off at the bus terminal. Just take a glance around when you get there and if you see metal detectors or something, give your shit to your friend to take back home. You can just pick up a new razor when you get there.
