Magic: The Gathering

Who would like to see a larger presence of Magic: The Gathering at PAX05? Although I personally dont play anymore due to a lack of people to play against, I would gladly be up for some booster drafts or other Limited tournaments so I wouldnt have to bring any cards with me...

As I suggested in another thread, Unhinged(Or other recent sets if you prefer more serious games) booster drafts could be done, boxes sell for around $80 each, 6 box cases can be found for around $440... 36 packs to a box, you can do an 8 person draft per each box and have 12 packs left over. Maybe cheaper if you look around more.

Or you could do a larger Booster Draft tournament, 64 people(Im assuming 64 Magic Players would be easy to find in a crowd of 3000+ Gamers, especially for a limited tournament where no one needs to bring cards, you might be able to do more then one of these tournaments) split into 8 person draft groups, winner of each group moves onto the top 8 at which point you could continue with the same decks they drafted in the first portion, redraft new decks, or draft new packs and let them use the new cards and the old cards to make a better deck. 6 Boxes is exactly enough to do 9 Drafts, covering the 8 draft groups and a new draft for the Top 8.

Would anyone else be interested in something like this? And if you dont like Unhinged, what sets would you suggest to draft? Unhinged would certainly make it a more entertaining tournament to watch. 9th Edition also comes out right before PAX, and although less interesting is another possibility.

Also, another thing Ive suggested in the past that I feel like bringing up again. The possibly of getting Wizards of the Coast to sponsor and include a Magic Promo card in the goodie bags at the door. They are also a Washington based company so they may be willing to sponsor a convention in their area. And what kind of promo card would be cool for PAX, M:TG players or not? With recent sets containing quite a few Samurai cards, A reprint of one of those with alternate(Cardboard Tube Samurai) art would be something of a cool promo card.

Any limited tournaments? I dont really have any decks worth using in normal tournaments single or team... Id be willing to pay around 10 dollars for a booster draft of any kind to cover the packs, I just mainly want to be able to play without worrying about not having the right cards for whatever type of tournament(especially if its type two, considering I dont have any Mirrodin, Dark Steel, Fifth Dawn, Champions of Kamigawa or Betrayers of Kamigawa, and about 4 packs of 8th edition, I litterally couldnt make a type two deck right now) since I havnt bought cards since the Legions prerelease.

I'd be more comfortable with bringing the decks I already have. I mean, that's what I did last year, it wasn't too much of an inconvenience.

But I don't know if I'd go there and buy cards...especially if they're Unhinged. Champions of Kamigawa, maybe, but also less likely.

Also, another concern would be tables. I only played one game last year...and it was on the ground. What a close game that was.

You can make a semi-viable Type 2 deck for like $15.

I still prefer booster drafts because going into it everyone is on even footing and its more a matter of whos better then who has the most money to buy the best cards. Obviously some luck is involved, but I still find limited tournaments to be more fun and a better test of ones skill.

If its only Type 2 for the official tourny then I geuss I'll cook something up for the older players. As I said before most likely 8th and back, no mirrodin. I'll come up with some prizes...

Type 2 is good, but Unhinged draft is a must. Unhinged is the kind of thing PAX is all about.

Now, I'm not sure... is 9th going to be out before PAX? If so, maybe we have to draft that too. I know we'll have Saviors in time...

Type 2 at the moment would consist of everybody hauling in Afinity, Tooth & Nail or some other mainstream deck. If Type 2 is necessary, I'd like to see a rogue deck tournament, where the deck you bring along cannot be a deck that has made a Top 8 finish in any tournament of level Grand Prix or higher. Booster drafts are always a good thing to do, they draw people who've either forgotten their decks or simply want to have fun.

How would you decide whether its the same deck as the ones in the top 8s, though? Im sure there are some crazy rogue decks that use ravager but aren't Raffinity.

    Anyway, I'll be running a R/G Spirit/Arcane deck. Cost me about $15. :P

Decks could change by the time of PAX people may have found new uses for some of the cards from Betrayer's, and Saviors of Kamigawa will be out so the decks might change...

But that doesnt change the fact that we need Unhinged Drafts...

As in, they can't be based around a Top 8 concept. Using Ravager, or any other card in a netdeck is OK though.

Hey i am planning my trip to PAX and i agree i would like to see more MTG tourney's. I put up a little website with an open source online tourney planning program at www.elitenewbie.com So we could have a place where we can form tourney's and get organized. All i put up so far was a type one tourney i was thinking your booster draft idea sounded good too. If i get some more input from everybody i can organize more torunaments and we can decide on exact times and what not. So let's get mobilized people and make this happen!

I played in numerous games last PAX, two headed giant, kingdom of 5 on 5, and some 4 player games. I had no problem finding opponents or tables for playing space...

I dunno about buying more cards there either, I'll definately bring like 4 or 5 of my decks, but I'd have to debate over a draft (although if I did participate in that, it would definately be for unhinged, I'm done with collecting anymore 'serious' cards for serious play)

That and people hate my shadows =\

I'd be interested in going for a random-card tournament, which I'm assuming is what a booster draft is... (I'm probably mistaken). Sounds like fun.

Even if not, I'll have decks ready to play anyone willing. Maybe not 'type 2', or whatever you crazy kids are doing nowadays, but I'll have decks ready all the same.

In a booster draft, 8(well, usually 8, it could be done with more or less) people sit around a table and everyone gets 3 packs. Everyone opens the first pack, looks at the cards, keeps one and passes the rest to their left. Then you look at the cards passed to you, take one, and pass the rest of those, and repeat until all 15 cards are passed around. Then you open the next pack and do it again, but pass to the right, then the last pack and pass to the left again...

And then you build a deck out of the cards you drafted and play with that.

I'm a little confused as to how the rules work for the multiplayer magic tournament. It says "you may play "personal only" cards on your teammate or their library/creatures/hand/etc as though they were yourself. For example, a card which says "you draw two cards" can be played on your teammate instead, to allow them to draw the cards. "

For example, Glorious Anthem would give both me and my teammates creatures +1/+1, correct?

What about Death Pit Offering? Would my teammate have to sacrifice all his creatures?

Also, say I had a Honden of Infinite Rage in play. Would it trigger on both mine and my teammates upkeeps?

Finally, my teammate has a Kodama of the South Tree in play, and I play a Hana Kami. Will the Kodama trigger?

Heh, this would be a good thing is I came by, since I could be a judge for the games. Not officially or anything, but I studied the tournament rules for a while and figured out pretty much every situation and card and outcome, etc.

Another reason for to consider PAX? to be a...magic....judge?

    JoahW:

Hi! First off, thanks for your interest in the Magic Team Tourney! Second, I guess I should have been more clear in my wording for the tourney rules. Enchantments that say "you" or "your creatures" must pick a target when played -- either you OR your teammate, but not both. So for Glorious Anthem, you would pick either your creatures or your teammate's to receive the bonus. Death Pit Offering is the same, although note that you cannot pick two different targets for the "you." Either you personally sacrifice all your creatures and then gain the bonus, or your teammate does. Likewise with Honden -- either your upkeep or your teammate. I'm sure you get the picture! Please post or PM me if you have any other questions!

Whoa. I'm getting nerd flashbacks to high school.

But since you're all talking M:tG, I don't suppose anyone wants to buy a collection for $1,000, do they? I played from Unlimited through Urza's Saga. The most expensive deck I've got is a Wiessman T1 deck, and there's even a full set of the Collector's Edition cards in there.

Gotta pay for Bar review class, you see.

Prize for the magic tourney has been decided. IF I can get enough people. If I can get a confermed count of people that WILL play I can find out the entry cost. The Prize is definately worth it. but there is only one prize and it will go to the 1st place winner.

    Hmmmm....this is odd.

I'm looking at the event schedule and I don't see either of the MTG tournaments on it. Now, I understand that the schedule is tentative, but it would be nice to know when it is.

Oh snap....according to the registration, it is going to be on at the same time as the SSBM tournament. How can I choose which one tournament to go to and get my tail handed to me?
