And then we can have the "oh man, I've only played poker a few times" game where we bet snack chips and marshmallows.

I like the two-tiered poker game idea. The 25$ Texas hold-em table would hold a lot of attraction to me. Plus its a good way to get to know everybody. You truly don't know somebody until they're chasing a straight, pot committed and the guy on the button just called "all in". 8)

I reraise you all-in with my habanero pickles.

I would very strongly suggest against a tournament for the big-bet game. At an event like PAX, people are going to be coming and leaving, showing up late, leaving early etc etc. Having it a live game (aka a ring game aka a non-tournament game) enables people to come and leave as they choose. Playing with chips and holding to table-stakes rules (basically only chips play) makes the games fair so people can't be pulling money in and out of wallets. Pretty standard stuff. This enables you to have a game going for a longer period of time, enables more people to play because they can come and leave as they need to, and eliminates the "waiting game" of waiting for the stragglers to start a tournament which always happens.

We could play no-limit but in my opinion, pot-limit is better suited to this kind of game. You still get to play, "big bet" poker, most of the time you can put people all in on the turn, you see more flops and a few more showdowns than in no-limit, but you also see far far fewer showdowns than in limit where the best hand pretty much wins. It's easier to make moves on people.

Regardless, I would urge that the high-limit game be a live game as it will be easier to administer.

I'm willing to host a $25 buy-in game with 8 seats. When a seat empties, someone can buy-in from the table. We'll keep playing until people pass out or someone ends up with all the money.

hmm 8 people with others able to buy in.. how about just 2 games of 5, cause 8 is alot of people and makes it annoying with the fact that the number might never go down. Just my thoughts.

well i think it could be partial tournament play if we get enough people playing. cause i have played when there is too many people playing at one table and it is redicoulous.. I could go up to like 20$ anything over that and i be iffy cause i don't want everyone taking my money :P

that's fucking it, i quit poker.

i just got back from a game of no limit hold-em with some friends. i had pocket 2's, and 2-3-6 comes out on the board. i make a pretty big bet, and so does the other dude. the turn comes out. another 3. so i go all-in. the dude calls. he has pocket Aces. the only outs he had were an Ace and a 3. guess what fucking comes out on the river? a fucking 3. this is the third fucking time i lost against this same dude by ridiculous hands like this. Eh, take them as they come, dude. The last tournament I went in I had three good hands - KK, QQ and JJ, bet them all *heavy* pre-flop, lost to ace-weak x when an ace hit the flop. I was chip leader before that, all of them played stupid, and I still lost it all.

Skill in poker isn't everything, luck's still a factor. If it wasn't, then it wouldn't be as fun.

i'm thinking of just doing a cash game, because of the gypsy-like nature of the inhabitants of the bellevue hotel. everyone just sort of comes and goes, a cash game would be more suited for that.

A .50/1$ fixed limit dealers choice cash game would attract more people and be more fun, I think. Maybe we could do both?

Also, I work for an online poker site and I have a test site available where I can run private tournaments (for free only, no actual money set up on the test site). Anyone feel like having a PA tourny sometime soon?

Actually limit games are better when you have inexperienced players. With NL/PL the games tend to die quickly, with all the money going to the experienced players.

We want to make this fun with a bit of competition. NL games would kill the action quickly, for cash games.

For a tournament, though, definitely NL is best.

For a current PA tournament, see here

I'm up $232. If there's poker at pax, I'll probably miss all the events.

Edit: Instead of .50/1.00 limit (limit is a pita with non-casino players) we could play .10 - .25 with a 3.00 cap...

or .25-.50 PL, but that takes counting the pot sometimes...
I already told you that I would play poker with you Borfase

What's the deal with the flame bait posts today Borseface? Take another bad beat on the river? The other topic that you created in the PAX forum specifically to get a rise out of the Fragdolls wasn't enough? OK, I'll bite.

Bet you didn't know that one of the highest-stakes weekly game in the world is actually a limit game. If you want, you can show up on Wednesdays at the Bellagio and tell the likes of Chan, Duke, Harmon, Brunson, Sklansky, and Seidel that the $1000-$2000 limit game is "stupid."

Or if that isn't enough action for you, go play some $500-$1000 blind pot-limit Omaha also spread regularly at the Bellagio or at the Aviation club in Paris. Oh, wait, that's got the word limit in it. That and it also has a $50,000 "cap" for any single bet. And often, players who are involved in monster pots that can exceed $250,000 will run off the river card twice and award half of the pot to each of the two river cards because the amount of money involved is so astronomical.

Actual high-stakes no-limit games are pretty rare outside of a tournament structure. Most of the highest stakes live games in the world with the top 10 players in the world have some kind of limit. Refining your previous post from "pssh, limit games are lame" to the more assertive "playing with limits is stupid" doesn't contribute to the conversation, get people excited to play, or make you look intelligent.

JohnnyCache: I play pot limit weekly. Counting the pot is fast and easy and really doesn't slow the game down from when we used to play limit. I'd totally be down for .25-.50 pot-limit!

i didn't even read that, just sort of scenned through it

    a) that post wasn't flamebait

    b) the idea of doing the drag doll thing was actually reccomended by jinx, whom told me of the idea in a match of splinter cell

    c) i never try to look intelligent on a message board because i don't care enough

    d) i would walk into the bellagio and tell the likes of johnny chan that limit games are stupid, because, again, i don't care

but the point is i don't like limit games because there's not as much room for bluffing and anyone who has played with me will tell you that i very aggressively play the board
