In terms of gameplay, the entire game can be played using only one hand because you can do everything with the shoulder button and the D-pad. Yes all characters spit out the 2 diffrent things when you talk to them twice as was standard for old RPG's, but most of the characters are not lifeless or dull as you said you thought of DQ. No there is not character customization, just like most RPG's all the stats are done for you every time you level up. As far as I know it was one of the earlier RPG's with on screen enemies and if they are weak enough the battle ends the second you come into contact with them.

That being said this game is long, and you should probably atleast try it once to see what the fuss is about. For many people it contends with CT and FF3/6 as the best SNES RPG's. This game bleeds character out of every pore, from Buzz Buzz the talking bee 5min into the game, to the Happy Happy Cult, to The Run-a-way Five, and everyones favorite Mr. Saturn. Its legandary because the game IS legandary.

Earthbound is a great game because of the storytelling, writing, humor, and originality when compared to other RPGs of the time.

I should note that, even if you want to call Earthbound a "unique skin" of DQ, Mother 3 has enough going for it to be called original. It's even addictive. (Plus, it's one of the best stories ever told in a video game, and a great story in it's own right, regardless of format.) I realize that this does bring up the argument of whether a great game can be great based on other factors when the gameplay isn't as good, but even if you don't want to call it a good game, people outside of Japan deserve to experience this game. Hence, the constant effort of the community, especially those who have already played it in Japanese themselves, myself included.

    Amazing effort.

If only every awesome RPG that never got a US release had that kind of fanbase; we'd have been playing Sakura Taisen years ago.

Earthbound had decent gameplay for the time, but nothing special. The nostalgia comes from the wacky humor, weird settings, and unusual presentation. It's a good game if you like classic JRPGs, but I wouldn't say it vies for the best RPG on the SNES spot: I'd say FF6, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, and Lufia 2 are all superior games and if you include Japanese only games, there are even more games that surpass it.

With that said, I would still really like to play the GBA sequel. It looks like it spices the gameplay up with some interesting ideas and I could always use another good portable RPG that I've never played.

P.S. That fan book rocks! :)

One thing I liked about Earthbound is that if you leveled up, weaker monsters would run away from you. If you ran up to them, you could insta-kill them without having to actually fight.

It was awesome, and completely killed that crap where you're forced to fight monsters you can 1-shot, because they ran up to you.

It was a genius concept for it's time, and I've never really seen it replicated even in today's RPGs.

Anyway, they should send this book to the creator of Mother, as well as Shigeru Miyamoto and Iwata. Nintendo USA might be stubborn as hell, but Nintendo of Japan might not be as bad.

No we didn't. Because here, in America, we only had games like Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, and Earthbound. We had to settle. In America.

Terranigma wouldn't be better than CT or FF6 anyways.

I liked Illusion of Gaia more.

  • Magus`Magus` Registered User regular
Seems the two fan-based translation efforts have now combined.

Hopefully this will be a good thing.

Terranigma is a good game. The biggest problem is how it either forces you to grind in order to beat a boss or be very careful and wait for-fucking-ever while you whittle down its HP at 1-2 damage at a time.

Not to say I mind a challenge but whacking at something for 20 minutes is just tedious after awhile.

  • RainbowDespairRainbowDespair Registered User regular
Yeah, I liked Illusion of Gaia more myself as well mostly due to the whole "Grind or deal 1 damage to bosses" issue with Terranigma. I'm sure there's a good game in Terranigma somewhere, but I'd always get too impatient and give up on it after a few hours due to that problem.

Where is Starmen.net pulling this from?
Because EarthBound is coming out on the Virtual Console soon, and its sales will be THE determining factor in whether MOTHER 3 is brought to America or not.

    Because I'm stoked.

Either they bugged someone at Nintendo enough to get this fact, or they are jumping to a very obvious conclusion.

The release of EarthBound 'soon' is because Lucas Thomas (of IGN) brought it up late last year. He said something vague about middle (or summer maybe) of 'next year' (2007).

I tried out Earthbound some years ago. Just a couple of hours, but I remember that the game did leave an impression on me. I had no idea of a cult following and the only thing I knew about it beforehand was a relatively negative review I read ages ago, so I didn´t have any expectations. I thought I was probably the only person in the world who saw something intriguing and special in that game. It did seem like one of those games that are more than a sum of its parts. The whole series in a DS pack would be something I´d definitely buy, and I´m not a part of the fan base.

I might be wrong, but my impression is that Earthbound didn´t actually sell horribly bad in USA. The problem, AFAIK, was that Nintendo had too much expectations, took a huge first print run, and lost a ton of money when the game ended up selling just a reasonable amount and plenty of cartridges were left over.

I would bet its probably a kid icarus game for the wii or ds personally. You could make a kicjass update to either one, and no one really knows where Pit came from when they see him in Brawl.

I want mother 3 too though

Yeah, I think it could be Kid Icarus or any number of games, but at the same time, Earthbound just seems all but ready to go.

And I think that, at least in the US, it's been about as dead as you can get; even Pit got some new life on Virtual Console.

The whole series is already available on the GBA, why the need for a DS pack? All they need to do is translate the GBA versions and you can play those on your DS if you want. A DS version would just be unnecessarily big and clunky and have a useless second screen, like the DS versions of Battle Network, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, Phoenix Wright 2 (not 1 mind you, because that one had DS-specific features) etc. etc. compared to their GBA counterparts.

Yeah, but, you know... if they released it on the DS over the GBA it might actually sell

Me too, but I think a Kid Icarus game is most likely, Punch Out for Wii next most likely, then something Mother related. Though they could come out of left field with a new Startropics. That wouldn't be too bad...

Nevermind that like fifty percent of those characters are Mario characters now.

Maybe they will bring back their Popeye games or maybe even Gumshoe!
The player acts as Mr. Stevenson, the main character and a former gumshoe. Mr. Stevenson's daughter Jennifer has been kidnapped by a mafia boss, King Dom, and has to retrieve five Black Panther Diamonds within 24 hours. Defeating Zulie, who has eaten the last diamond, allows Stevenson to rescue his daughter by paying off King Dom. This results in King Dom kidnapping Stevenson's daughter the very next day requiring him to again retrieve five Black Panther Diamonds.

In the game, Mr. Stevenson continuously walks to the right like a scrolling shooter. The player must shoot the enemies as they come on the screen. The world is laid out like a platformer, reminiscent of the Super Mario Bros. series, and the player can shoot Mr. Stevenson to make him jump.

There are four levels of the game, with one Black Panther Diamond in each, with the exception of the fourth level, with two. The path is non-linear, and changes, depending on the route the player has Mr. Stevenson take (upper or lower). Some paths are longer than others. The four levels include a land level, an air level, a sea level and a jungle level.

Shooting Mr. Stevenson to make him jump will not subtract from the player's ammunition. Shooting obstacles, or an empty area, however, will subtract one bullet from the total. Having Mr. Stevenson grab red balloons will add bullets.
I am going to start a rumor that the game will be like GTA.
