So, what books are you guys reading at the moment?

I just finished The Road. It was very good.

I'm about to tackle Ulysses. I'll see if I can get past the first chapter.

I liked Cat's Cradle more than Slaughterhouse Five. Because the former was basically like a big, overt "fuck you" to so many dumb things in our society. The literary equivalent of standing on a hill and giving everyone the finger. Slaughterhouse Five was good, though. I need to get more Vonnegut books.

I do have The Name of the Rose sitting here unread which I'd like to get to. And A Feast For Crows, but I'm trying to decide if I should re-read the first three books and then AFFC, or if I should just wait for A Dance With Dragons and read all five in one weekend.

I usually pick a Sunday afternoon to read Slaughter House 5, every 6 months or so. Always good.

Halfway through Grapes of Wrath right now... Love Steinbeck; but, not really motivated to read lately.

Harry Potter 1-6 in preparation for 7 that is coming out in a couple of weeks. I'm also reading Feet of Clay when I'm at work too. It's pretty good so far.

I've only read the two I mentioned, so I cannot really comment on which Vonnegut book is best.

Though I did appreciate his "as self" appearance in Rodney Dangerfield's "Back to School." Great stuff.

ive read norwegian wood a few times
and murakamis first couple of short books a few times

more recently i finished kafka on the shore
and this book called 'after school keynotes' which was short stories all about high school girls falling in love and coming of age

atm im reading 'tuvalu' by some australian author

oh a really good book is 'shantaram'

i believe theyre making a movie of it with johnny depp but you really should read it

edit: just so you have some idea of what it is.. its a sorta autobiography of this guy who escaped from an australian prison and while he was on the run ended up in india, where the story begins and goes through how he lived in slums and rose through the bombay mafia and joined rebel fighters in the afghan war and such

    just craziness

    and from that link
Shantaram is one of those books that you wait to find for five years, even a decade. You know how it is. You read a really great book and, on coming to the end page, immediately want to find another book just as good to fill its place. So you go out looking for such a book, but cannot find it. You look for a week, then a month, then months turn to years, and finally,5 to 10 years later, you finally find a book that is a really great read.

Shantaram is such a book. It is an A+ story that captivates you on page one and sustains the pace through every one of its 920 pages. It overflows with a wide range of characters of every moral persuasion, good and bad. And it is rich with the big themes on the nature of humanity and the human struggle to survive and thrive, for better or worse. In addition, the actual writing is superb, descriptive and often beautiful, without ever descending into sentimental or maudlin. Roberts always manages to find the right phrase or word to bring into clear focus the incredible wide range of experiences he paints. I might add, this is one book that I do not want to see as a movie, because there is no way that a mere movie could be a fraction as good as this glorious, three dimensional work.

I'll be lucky if I have to wait only another 5 - 10 years to find another book this good.

I want to re-read Cat's Cradle too. I read that about...11 years ago. One of the few books I was forced to read for high school that I adored. Slaughterhouse Five I read about 2 years ago.

I'll probably pick up a collection...I'm sure there's a Vonnegut collection out now, yeah?

I'm reading Chainfire by Terry Goodkind, because I think I hate myself. Learning a lot from his technique, though.

Also reading George Leonard's Mastery, because it's one of the single most inspirational books I've ever read.

I'm reading Choke by Chuck Palahnuik right now. Following this is going to be The Wanting Seed by Anthony Burgess. After that I'm not really sure, I'm thinking either some Hunter S. Thompson or Vonnegut.
