01. [WII] Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors (Square-Enix) - 263,000 / NEW
Media Create have updated their numbers; they are now reporting that DQS sold 305K units last week. (Also stolen from Cheesemeister @ Neogaf.)
This is a polite letter from Japan to Square-Enix. It reads "if you make stuff on Nintendo platforms that we used to buy on the PS2, we'll still buy 'em like they're sweet sweet heroin."
Enterbrain’s research indicates that as of July 15, Nintendo’s Wii console had sold 3.01 million units, having been released in Japan on December 2, 2006, while DS units sold topped 18 million since launch in December 2004, reports Reuters.
So the Wii has sold about three times the amount of the PS3 in Japan.

And the gap is only widening. PS3's average per week this year is about 17k (more like 10k recently), and Wii's is about 70k.

I want to know who the hell is buying all those PSPs.
PSP is a fine system and deserves at least that level of sales. What I'm curious about is why the hell nobody buys PSP games.
because it is very easy to pirate them, that's why. It doesn't take a fucking genius/someone who can install a modchip to play a pirated game on the PSP, just a list of instructions, some files, and a game.

Hm? If you buy a brand new PSP off the shelf today, there an't no way you're going to be pirating games on it (unless you install a modchip or something).

You sure about that? One of my friends got a PSP right after the price drop and it was a 1.50. I guarantee most of the places have a model where the Lumines trick works. Lumines is a very common game. I don't want to get into further details but most of the people I know with the PSP do not buy their games, ala the Dreamcast.
Game that wasn't released on pretty much every console and sold well enough to get into the top 20 on the NPD or Media Create chart?
Final Fantasy Tactics, I think. I don't remember, but something on it was on the top of the charts one of these weeks. Hell, go back a couple dozen pages and you'll probably find it.

Piracy is rampant on the PSP, and no version is yarr-proof. However, piracy on the DS is just as easy, yet DS games sell like liquid sex.
I firmly believe that piracy is not a main cause of the lackluster PSP sales.
In this sense, the multifunctionality of the PSP might be it's achilles' heel. Some people may buy a game or two, but mostly use it for movies or music, and thus the software sales suffer. Not to mention the huge number of people using it mostly or only for homebrew.

I really don't think piracy is as big a deal as many people make it out to be. I mean, even with the Dreamcast, piracy was the least of that system's problems.
This is why I like this thread. Regardless of the console, some of these numbers are just nutty. Japan sold 109K wiis in one week, twice the amount sold in Canada in one month. I know there are population and demographic discrepencies, but doubling up in one week what it took Canada a month to do? Christ.
Pac Man is chomping down hard. There's almost no Ghost Monster left.
Sweet. Now I just need a time machine so I can go 12-18 months into the future and buy a fuck-all stack of JRPGs and quirky, waggle-rific Atlus titles.
Seriously though, 86.9% of all console sales in Japan? That's pretty incredible.

Yeah, I got a kick out of that. That game came out before Wii did too, it was cool to see.
