[DIY On] Custom DS Faceplates, PSP and more!

As I mentioned in the new purchases thread, I was shopping for a case for my new DS on account of the fact that I am a clumsy oaf and I'm terrified of dropping it. So I came across these awesome Transformers cases at Toys R Us.

It is essentially a thin clear plastic shell that snaps over the DS lite and leaves all the buttons and ports exposed. I didn't expect to leave it on even when I was playing, but it's light and unobtrusive enough that it doesn't bother me at all. It also comes with 24 Transformers glossy cards that go between the case and the DS.

Anyway, I love to personalize my stuff, but after my GBA painting experience I decided I never wanted to paint another piece of gaming hardware again. In recent thread about painting a DS lite, I remembered someone posting some decals they made for their DS and it got me thinking. So today I drew up a template for the case and whipped up a quick insert to show my undying love for all things Scott Pilgrim.

Apologies for the crummy picture, a photographer I am not.

Here's a template I made, if anyone would like to have a go at making their own.

I'm not sure how many of these clear plastic cases are around, but they struck me as something quite a few people might have. If you don't, I'm sure you could print them off as stickers and just stick em on. I like these because you can change them whenever you get bored, and you don't risk fucking up/getting crud all over your DS Lite.

Anyway, if anyone wants to make one of their own and post them up, go for it! Also if you have any ideas for a cool custom faceplate or a pic that might work well please let me know. I'll make some and take pictures.

For the custom ones, how do you actually get it in the DS? I will definitely participate in this thread if I can figure out how to insert the slide into my DS. 8-)

It doesn't go into the DS itself, there's a little clear plastic case that I bought at toys R us. I'm not sure if there's a way to slide it under the clear plastic on the DS itself. If you really want to customize your DS I think it's best to just buy one of those at toys r us. Here's the website for the transformers ones. You can get them off the site for 20 bucks.

Thanks that pic doesn't do it justice. It looks so awesome sitting on my night stand.

I didn't like the colors on the finished piece that O'Malley did so I found the B&W version and recolored it to match the little kim on the front. Maybe I did put too much work into this.

Wow that looks really cool. I think my case is the exact same. I figured it was some kind of generic one that they were using with the transformers plates.

I use them on my DS to make sure I don't scratch the casing.

I broke my enamel blue ds lite so I bought a white one when they came out here. Not wanting my expensive blue ds to go to waste, I combined the units. Kind of ugly but at least it's unique.

Here in Hong Kong the gaming shops sell some nice floral/abstract/psychadelic sticker packs for the DS. $100 HK (about £7 UK), you get three stickers. One for the top of the DS, and two more for the two inner faces to go around the screens. Look really nice, and a loads of colours and designs to suit all colours of DS including the new silver and metallic rose models.

I don't know if they are available online yet, but I'll see if I can get a photo at some point to show you what I mean. Simplest and cheapest solution for a DS casemod probably.
