It looks like a shear break but it is too far in for a large shear force to generate.

I love it when bridges fall down, but get a bit bummed that I have a good day when people die.

But hey, a bridge fucking collapsed.

how would that happen, just age?

i bet what happened was the whole thing was post tensioned when built and recent construction broke some of those cables causing half the concrete surrounding that part of the bridge to explode into each other. then again i dont know if you do that with bridges... can you?

it did collapse during some sort of renovation?

Fatigue isn't so much age as it is constant use. Why I think it's fatigue is because it apparently collapsed while the train was travelling over. Trains are notorious for generating fatigue. The thing that I personally found a little odd is that in Australia the design code doesn't allow concrete bridges for trains for exactly this reason. The American code apparently allows it.

They were apparently renovating it when it collapsed and there were several cracks on the underside beams from reports I have heard.

I agree with penguin I would rule out trolls or giants at this early stage.

EDIT: Also the concrete wouldn't explode, it failed in either shear or pure tension, that's why the break line is so clear.

When concrete explodes in a beam it isn't nearly as interesting as everyone things it will be. The top kinda just blows off and it sags alot.

There is no train over that bridge, the train is under the bridge.

I'm guessing the vibration of the train could still put stress on the supports of the bridge beyond what it would normally have to handle.

I could also be completely full of shit and not know what I'm talking about.

the train? i dont even think its on a bridge, it runs along the length of that part of the Mississippi i think

so i guess that could work if it vibrated the entire foundation first or some such thing

If it vibrated the bridge then it wouldn't of caused a bending failure it would of caused a shear failure because the forces would generate closer to the supports.

It may of had concrete cancer but I doubt anyone is fucking stupid enough to screw that up in this day and age but it was cracking.

Its really not in the best interest of the trolls to knock the bridges over, or otherwise destroy them. Thats where they LIVE. If they destroy their home, they just have to go find another one.

And we all know how lazy trolls are.

There's a certain "forum", and I use that word loosely, that probably has already made a Chris, duffy, and a Rape Man gif of the bridge falling.

It's just that, most of the bodies are amongst TONS OF RUBBLE.

It's kinda hard to find them all.

The real figure it usually how many are "missing" after 2 days. So, however many are missing tomorrow + already dead bodies is probably the death toll.
