Sorry to rain on the parade here, but what am I missing?

I'm a complete R&C newbie, and downloaded the demo on PSN last week... I played for about 15 minutes and turned it off in boredom. It felt like rather bland shooting to me, with almost no platformy elements, although I enjoyed the bit where you ground on the rails, and the disco ball weapon was definitely entertaining.

Also, I couldn't invert the camera, which drove me a bit batty.

It's not like I don't like platformers - I played Super Mario World on GBA to death, loads of Crash Bandicoot and Spyro on PS1, enjoy Mario 64 and (yes, I realize this doesn't fully count) Zelda, really like New SMB, looking forward to Super Mario Galaxy, etc. So I went in fully expecting to like it. But all I got was what felt like some rather bland shooting.

Do I need to dive back in and play through to the end? Is it really mostly a shooter and less a platformer? Is the demo just a bad slice of the game? Is there anything in particular that I missed that I need to try?

Do... do I just hate fun? D:

The demo isn't a very good slice of the gameplay. It also doesn't have a lot of the control options the full game has - in the game you can invert the X and Y axes independently, as well as adjust camera speed, enable motion controls, and switch from third-person (normal) to lock-strafe (shooter) control schemes.

There is a lot more platforming in the full game, trust me. The demo is the first level, and you don't really get into it until a bit later on. It seems that the first level is meant to familiarize people with the controls more than anything else.

(Side note: all games with active tutorial/hint setups should skip tips for maneuvers you've already performed.)

IMO, every PS3 owner should play this game, it really is that good.

I am really enjoying the weapon upgrade system in this one, it's a big improvement from Deadlocked. Instead of plug-n-play weapon mods, it works much more like Final Fantasy X/XII with the sphere grid/license board. Each weapon has its own upgrade path, which you can improve independently of leveling the weapon itself.

I finally pick it up today (I keep forgetting that I have a PS3 :rotate: It folds proteins and plays ps2 games for me mostly)

The problem with demos for R&C games is most of the fun is the ridiculous weapons (and number of weapons) in the game, and the first couple of levels tend to have only the basic weapons.

Also, the fact that weapons level up. It's great fun using overkill weapons just to level them up... and make them even more overkill. :D

Been playing the hell out of this. Doing challenge mode and just got the golden groovitron. I love the nice little touches like how EVERYTHING gets into the music: Enemies (bosses from the arena too), robo civies, grummelNet vendors, Ratchet (well, he bobs his head), and even Clank does a little dance from your back.

Debating playing through the series before playing this one. Just got it today. Any MC unlockables like the past games did? Transfering bolts and whatnot?

    No, not in this one.

They obviously would have liked to continue the 'unlock your guns from the last game' thing they had going on, but that would mean either a) using the models/animations from the PS2 games (aka not PS3 quality) or b) remaking those weapons, which would eat up too much time.

Has anyone solved the decryptor puzzle on Mukow? If so, could you spoiler the solution or PM it to me?

Jesus H Christ, someone help me out on this one. Its driving me insane.

I beat the game, now working on challenge mode and upgrading the hell out of everything... I somehow missed the 'ultimate' upgrades to the weapons... where do you get those?

Not sure how to describe the solution for the decryptor puzzle. Once you get past the first connection it seemed pretty straight forward. You start it by bridging the first break downward.

As far as 'ultimate' upgrades you can buy the omega weapons from the vendor after you've upgraded to v5. The omegas start at v6 and can be upgraded to v10(VX). There's no change in how they work or their appearance...only an increase in power.

The V6 to V10 is only available in challenge mode correct?

Are gold bolts not used for weapon upgrades in this game then?

If so, I'm so buying the mustashio skin.

Now I feel exceptionally stupid. D:

Thanks for letting me feel that way alone, though - it would've been awful to have my GF show me how to do it.

I never got into R&C until a few days ago. After all the hype for ToD, I decided to pick up the first three and see if they gave me another reason to buy a PS3 (For ToD).

How the hell did I miss these games? Seriously. I guess part of the reason is I was always more of a Jak person and just kind of skipped over these, but they are fun. I then realized that Insomniac also did the first three Spyro games, like Naughty Dog did the first three Crash games, and I really felt retarded. I loved the original Spyro games! I got into Jak because I loved Crash, so I really can't believe I missed these.

Anyways, this is a definite must-buy for me when I pick up a PS3 in December/January, along with Uncharted. Until then, though, these old R&C games will have to keep me busy (Along with the slew of Wii60 games coming out next month).

The only use for gold bolts is to buy skins and the golden children skill point.

Edit: Got all the skins now. Mustachio was the last one I got...it sucks. It just adds the goofy glasses/mustache on top of your current armor. I was hoping it would be like a poor man's old school ratchet skin.

So I'm in Challenge mode, I've got what I guess is the best armor...and I'm betting there's no way to get back to another look, is there? Mostly suits me fine, though...looks hella slick with the blade...melee...things.

Aside from switching skins? Don't think so. (Actually, if memory serves, you used to be able to switch to a previous set of armor. Wasn't a good idea though)

It pulls the old Bioshock "Hey this isn't a cutscene you're in control now" thing with some frequency, by having the camera start in an unorthodox spot at the beginning of each level, which is cool.
Hella awesome, that is one of my gaming highlights this year.

Yeah, I love showing that part of Bioshock to people and watching them react to it.

And thank you very much for the insights Cheesechick! That's most helpful.

Anytime! Oh and since I didn't mention it: if you've got a PSP, Size Matters is great too.

Hm, so the PSP version holds up well to the console Ratchets, then? Cool, I'll have to pick it up when I get a PSP.

there's a 2nd R&C game called Secret Angel Clank on the way too

    Secret Agent Clank.

Which will have some sort of connectivity to ToD. Does anyone know any more details about that?

I found a secret area in the Clank goes into the computer area (vague enough, I hope) where the female announcer said "Congratulations, you've found a code to unlock a secret disguise in Secret Agent Clank." and then gave me a button code (which I didn't write down, sorry).

I hope there is more to the connection than that...

Yeah the Trillium armor is the last armor in the game. It is slick but now you can never see Ratchet's face again unless you start a whole new game.

Edit: Heh. I just noticed that this is the only home console R&C game to get an "E" rating from the ESRB. I guess they've become a little more lenient with their ratings.

I seem to be the only person having a problem getting all the Tachyon Statues on Planet Mukow. One of them you have to go off the path and jump onto a small wall/block attached to a larger part of the wall. This is JUST after you come off the dock into the city you take a left and the Statue is on the top of that Larger section. I cannot for the life of me get it. After jumping on the small section when i try to get onto the large one i either don't come close to getting high enough OR I bounce off the wall. I can get all the others. I even beat all the arena challanges...well cept for the one where you can't take any damage...i'll save that for WAY later. Is there anything you need to do besides JUMP....? It's killin me!! Any advice you can give me, I will greatly appreciate!!

:( I just figured it out....i had never did the "crouch" jump. I had went into the device menu and tried different things...it wasn't till i went back in one last time..that i read the description of the Heli thingy...and...well...sorry. :)

Are you using the straight hover jump thing, basically stand still hold crouch and jump and clank does the hover thing and you go a little higher.
