Having a currency backed by nothing might have been problematic when we first started using it, but bankers learned the hard way during the 70s than inflation kills growth, so I don't think we should worry too much about it now. The problems now come from bubbles that are harder to detect (property for example)

They also had massive inflation. Like, there would see more inflation in a day then we saw during the 90's.
