Jack Thompson does something stupid thread, 38th(ish) edition
Sorry if this has been posted, I tend to be about 3 hours late on Jack Thomson threads(I did look and didn't see it on the first 3 pages), but I just saw this on Slashdot.
From Slashdot:
"Outspoken anti-games lawyer Jack Thompson has decided that a representation of a 2nd amendment lawyer in GTA IV is a mocking version of him. He has declared that if the representation is not removed he will attempt to block the release of the game. Excerpt from GamePolitics: 'The showcasing play of the game to Game Informer revealed that the first killing mission of the hero of the game, Niko, is to kill a certain lawyer. When Niko comes into this lawyer's office, having used subterfuge to do so, Niko pulls a gun on the lawyer who says, that the firm supports the second amendment and that 'Guns don't kill people. Video games do.'"
I would usually say that he's a fucking moron and bash him for being so stupid, but I'm past that and am now just at the point of laughing at the hilarity that he has become.
Larry Craig is in the same boat you are: something he's done is getting widely mocked in commercial venues, often for profit. If what you're trying to do had any legal basis, Craig would be suing everyone under the sun right now.
In conclusion, shut the fuck up.
I'm trying, through my blog, to break into the journalism industry. Any eyes and ears that pick up on any leads towards that end are greatly appreciated. PM me if you happen to hear anything.
No, he's allowed. It just means that he'll eventually be subject to another psych exam, which he'll pass just like the last one.
On top of the various posts provided by the guys behind Penny Arcade who have pointed out the various reasons why Jack is a complete lunatic, there's also this blip from the VG Cats Archives.

Good times.
I think breaching the terms of a settlement is going to cost him more than a psych exam. That's if he isn't just blowing hot air as usual.

I forgot all about that. Oh, Jack.

Jeez, I told you guys that he was done. He's getting desperate and even put himself in danger just to get more publicity, ah whatever this'll be the last time, im 90% positive.
Spoiler:
unless he does some extreme lawyer dickery and some how wins the case

Yeah, didn't he write a book a few years ago that was a complete failure? Like, Jack didn't even hire a proofreader or something, it was that bad.
This is not the greatest sig in the world.
This is just a tribute.
You know how sometimes the most anti-homosexual people are really in the closet?
Perhaps something similar is going on with Jack.
You see, when he was a younger man, he was the only guy around who didn't own Pong. Desperate to get in on the intense action, but secretly ashamed of his desire for electronic entertainment, Mr. Thompson found himself seeking out underground Pong facilities. The arenas were notoriously hard to locate, with prospective players being force to hang out in public arcades or skate parks performing an elaborate set of hand signals disguised as normal gestures and behaviors in these areas.
After finally landing himself an invitation to a typical underground Pong game, Jack found himself embarrassed by a 7 year old, losing 10-0 6 times in a row. To make matters worse, the 7-year old's parents' basement was raided, forcing Jack to flee, barely escaping.
He was later caught by an undercover officer as he solicited an invitation for another underground Pong game in a nearby arcade, hoping to put his embarrassing defeat and near capture behind him. He, of course, loudly proclaimed in press conferences that he was not a gamer, had no desire to be a gamer, that the police were railroading him, that his signals were unintentional, etc.
And that brings us to today. Ashamed of his secret desire and his embarrassing defeat, Jack Thompson portrays himself as the most anti-gamer person possible. Meanwhile, in public arcades.....
This is funny because isn't he legally bound to not try and block anything Take Two/Rockstar puts out or he breaks their settlement and gets the shit sued out of him or something? This rules.
In the settlement, filed with Federal District Court Judge Cecilia Altonaga, Thompson has agreed that he:
1.) will not sue or threaten to sue to block sale or distribution of any game published by Take Two or its subsidiaries (i.e., Rockstar).
2.) will not communicate to Take Two or anyone doing business with T2 (like, say Wal-Mart) any accusation that the company committed any wrongdoing by selling its games. Thompson is not restricted from criticizing the content of T2 games, nor is he prevented from acting as counsel in lawsuits brought against Take Two by other parties
3.) will make any future contacts with T2 through its attorneys
For its part Take Two has agreed to dismiss the federal lawsuit and Thompson will drop his counterclaim. T2 has also agreed to drop the Bully contempt of court matter. There was to have been a hearing on the case tomorrow morning, and Thompson could potentially have been jailed if he were found to be in contempt by a Miami-Dade County judge.
He appears to be violating points 1, 2, and 3 of the settlement. He wants to block the sale of the game. He is claiming the game is a threat to his life (the same as saying it's a threat to the lives of policemen). And he is contacting them, and carbon-copying the email to the press again.
I don't see how he could get out of this one.
Unless he subpoenas somebody who couldn't make it to his trail on breaking the settlement.

Oh that isn't so bulletproof...
"Oh hay, would you sign this paper saying you've retained me as councel for a lawsuit against Take Two Interactive, Inc? My fee will be just $.01 retainer, and $.01 an hour!"

Ignore Rockstar Games, they're desperate and just want attention.

Desperate? GTAIV is still guaranteed to sell million and Manhunt 2 and that Tennis games should sell a nice amount.

That was the joke Tit Mouse.
Oh. My sarcasm detector is broke after wading through a few other forums looking for information on attach rates.
I'm glad Mr. Thompson isn't blocked from posting on GamePolitics anymore. If the man wants a length of rope, shouldn't we oblige him?
This recent post on GP illustrates his stance here...
First of all, I want to make it clear that Dennis McCauley got this from the court file.
Secondly, this is not “parody.†This is targeting. Big difference. This is rather foolish on Take-Two’s part.
But Jack's Modest Proposal is clearly parody, and not targeting in any way.
O.K. first hops a plane from LAX to New York to reach the Long Island home of the CEO of the company (Take This) that made the murder simulator on which his son's killer trained. O.K. gets "justice" by taking out this female CEO, whose name is Paula Eibel, along with her husband and kids. "An eye for an eye," says O.K., as he urinates onto the severed brain stems of the Eibel family victims, just as you do on the decapitated cops in the real video game Postal2.
the rest of the violence...
Spoiler:
O.K. then works his way, methodically back to LA by car, but on his way makes a stop at the Philadelphia law firm of Blank, Stare and goes floor by floor to wipe out the lawyers who protect Take This in its wrongful death law suits. "So sue me" O.K. spits, with singer Jackson Brown's 1980's hit Lawyers in Love blaring.
With the FBI now after him, O.K. keeps moving westward, shooting up high-tech video arcades called GameWerks. "Game over," O.K. laughs.
Of course, O.K. makes the obligatory runs to virtual versions of brick and mortar retailers Best Buy, Circuit City, Target, and Wal-Mart to steal supplies and bludgeon store managers and cash register clerks. "You should have checked kids' IDs!"
O.K. pushes on to Los Angeles. He must get there by May 10, 2006. That is the beginning of "E3" -- the Electronic Entertainment Expo -- the Super Bowl of the video game industry. O.K. must get to E3 to massacre all the video game industry execs with one final, monstrously delicious rampage.

I can't wait to play GTA IV now.
It has nothing at all to do with any specific desire I may or may not have to inflict extreme virtual harm on a virtual representation of a douchenozzle lawyer who may or may not be a polygonal doppleganger of an actual lawyer who may or may not be named "Jack Thompson."

I've love for him to illustrate exactly what this "difference" is. I have a lawyer friend I can run this by and I'm pretty sure he'll tell me it's a bullshit term.
The important question is: Will he still have a license when GTA IV comes out?

Rickey Rouse and all that.

He's just a publicity hound prolonging his downfall.

It's that or he's batshit insane.

Jack boy seems to follow gaming news more closely than anyone else in the world.
Yeah, because if you ignore him he'll *poof!* magically disappear.
Yes.

sketchyblargh / Steam!
That's just what we need - a Jedi version of Jack Thompson.
Business 101 - nothing wrong with that.
