Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!
Okay, I'm getting a new flatmate on very short notice, so its time to fit a lock on my room's door (I'm lazy and have put it off for too long). I can't afford a locksmith, and it should be a simple job, so I'm looking to do it myself. Is there anything in particular I need to know? I can't find any relevant instructions online, only ones for doors which don't even have a normal handle on them yet, and that involves a lot of drilling bullshit I won't have to do. I think... I'll just be taking out the handle that exists and replacing it with a lockable one. Is this as easy as it sounds?

Does it have a standard doorknob now?
Did you want to replace it with a locking doorknob?
If the answers to both questions is "yes" then yeah it's pretty easy, and the last time I did it, the doorknob I bought came with installation instructions.
I am comforted by Richard Dawkins’ theory of memes. Those are mental units: thoughts, ideas, gestures, notions, songs, beliefs, rhymes, ideals, teachings, sayings, phrases, clichés that move from mind to mind as genes move from body to body. After a lifetime of writing, teaching, broadcasting and telling too many jokes, I will leave behind more memes than many. They will all also eventually die, but so it goes. - Roger Ebert, I Do Not Fear Death
cool. the doorknob is already there, my only worry is that its pretty old and might not conform to the same standards as a new one. looks the same size as the doorknobs at my parents' much newer house, though.
You could unscrew the knob/handle mechanism and show it to the people at the hardware store just to be on the safe side.
Might not be a bad idea, or at least just bring it to compare. There's a usually two or three different "standards" for how deeply-set the center of the mechanism is from the edge of the door. Although most handle and lock mechanisms have a sliding piece to adjust for this, it's something to take into consideration.
Other than that, 90% of the time all you'll have to do is remove two long screws, slide the handle on either side of the door off, then pull the "bolt" section out from the door edge. Repeat steps in reverse with new handle, and you're set. You may have to replace the striker on the door frame itself, but that's pretty rare. Most of the time the old one will work fine.
