Having trouble remembering a Sci-Fi book

Im having trouble remembering the title of a book and its bugging me. It's relatively well known, Im sure, so I think someone out there will remember the name and the author.
It concerns some kind of alien coming to earth and never showing his form - always hiding behind a mirror. I think it comes to earth to give humanity the choice of evolving or dieing. Because we're big ol scaredy pants, humanity chooses not to and we get obliterated. I think the alien ends up looking the stereotypical devil, and the theory goes that his form sent a future echo through our past and we were always afraid of the aliens form as some sort of warning.
Im relatively sure its Asimov or Sagan, but no search comes up with it in Wiki.
