He was also unware, somehow, that vikings had runic alphabets.
When I was first taking Japanese, and we started learning the Chinese numerals, there was an exercise where you were given the number in Kanji and asked to write it in Arabic numerals.
Half the fucking class: "But...but we don't know Arabic!"
I hope you can dig up some links, Medopine. That's very interesting stuff.
I also took this class about history of writing and language and we talked about this writing system I THINK it was from Easter Island, that is very very similar to another writing system from the other side of the world....arrrghh why can't I remember more.
Germanic languages and Sanskrit have some words in common but it seems to be a coincidence.

I'm an Eygpto-phile, so I like thinking they did the writing thing first.
But it's ok if it ain't true, cause they did a lot of rad stuff besides that anyway.
Also the Germans are still hanging on to the bust of Nefretiti and I AM a bit peeved that they won't give it back to Egypt (it was smuggled out of the country years ago all muddied up under the guise it was a piece of junk, grrr).

How the FUCK did they make the great Pyramid so exactly Medopine. Has anybody worked that out yet?
Manpower, big rocks, and lots o grease, since they didn't have horses then.
Also the pyramids were originally white stone with a band of red stone around the bottom and a gold capstone on the top. Would have been pretty awesome to look at in their day.
This is true. They used the insides for hunting other aliens!
Tricky bastards!

Pretty much the closest thing I could find that answers my question is antolian heiroglyphics, but that's more halfway between europe and india.
You northern europeans have been slack! Stealin all your written symbols, sheesh.
I am aware of the hypocrisy! Also

Well, since tribal lifestyle was still the big thing back then there was simply no need for an alphabet.

Awesome. Eva Green (Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale) is in The Golden Compass.
Also, if there is something worse than a .999 = 1 thread than it almost has to be a conversation about linguistics.
Guess what was in my Dad's wife's Oriental Trading Company box?
A MOTHER FUCKING JAPANESE HORNET. Oh god it was so scary. They froze, I picked up an ESPN magazine and fought a daring battle to the death. It took four direct hits for it to stop moving.

I also created the op to learn more. I have learned. I now know more.
Sorry for being ignorant in the past? Or should I say, sorry for being brave enough to show my ignorance in the spirit of learning more?

They've discovered an ancient Indic script that appears to predate the earliest Egyptian writings, AFAIK
It's hardly much to ask that you, at some point in your life, have come across the term "Latin Alphabet".
Or just have seen any Roman writing on anything ever, for that matter.
Well, since tribal lifestyle was still the big thing back then there was simply no need for an alphabet.
Languages with writing systems that they developed themselves, rather than acquired and adapted from another language, are incredibly rare.
I have never seen anything roman not already translated exactly into english. All I've ever seen are grecian mathematical symbols.
I like the idea that somewhere counterfiet Italian Ice is being smuggled into the country.

I think they brought the Written Languages in Europe thread into the [chat] because nobody was posting in the Written Languages in Europe thread.
A British penal colony. Brits love Latin!
