Why don't they stick to the official term then? Just because of one character looking like he's spiking a volleyball? I like meteor attack better as a term.

All meteor smashes are spikes. Not all spikes are meteor smashes.

A meteor smash is an attack that knocks your opponent straight down. You can tell an attack is a meteor smash because a star appears at the end of your character's attacking appendage when they use it. Examples include Mario's forward air and Yoshi's forward and downward air. Another big part of meteor smashes is that they can be meteor canceled. If you double jump at the same moment that someone hits you with a meteor smash, the attack will have no knockback.

Spikes are just plain-Jane attacks that knock people downward. I'm pretty sure that generally they're weaker than meteor smashes, but since at higher percentages it doesn't really matter, and since they can't be meteor canceled, they're still very good moves. Offhand the only example I can think of is Link's Up B.

Also, I picked up Metal Gear Solid: the Twin Snakes two days ago, my very first Metal Gear game. My appreciation for Snake being in Brawl has skyrocketed.

On an unrelated note, why the heck is the thing two discs long? The first disc hardly seemed as long as a lot of Gamecube games, and it feels like I'm getting pretty close to the end pretty quickly on the second one.

Cutscenes and voice acting, I'd guess. I can't remember if the cutscenes are in-engine or not.

Spikes, on the other hand, are meteor smashes cannot be cancelled and are therefore extremely deadly moves. Very few of these exist: Marth's down air, Falco's down air, Ganondorf's down B, Captain Falcon's hidden "nipple spike" in his down air, and some extremely hidden spike in Roy.

are you referring to roy's blade dance spike on the third upward hit? cuz that spike sucks huge. it can easily be canceled.

All you kids with your crazy names for moves. Back in my day we had two moves, attack and jump. You pushed them together to perform a super attack which took your health away.

    MEG-UH-MAN 2NITE!

    I wish. D:

Speculative dates for Mega Man reveal if it's:

Oct. 31st: Trick or treat updates with 3 being false and 1 being real (which will be Mega Man of course).
Nov. 22nd: Be thankful for Mega Man in Brawl.
Dec. 3rd: Sorry we couldn't release the game, here's a fucking rad update instead.
    Dec. 17th: Rockman's Anniversary!
Dec. 25th: Merry Christmas, you filthy animals.
Jan. 1st: What better way to ring in the new year?
Feb. 11th: They put it off long enough, here he is! Go buy the game! Alternatively he's not revealed but is still a secret character discovered when the game releases on Feb. 10th.
    Otherwise: Shit it was Rayman/Pac-Man/Pikmin!

Roy's up smash and up+b can send people downwards, but it more or less requires a huge fluke. Both his forward+b spike and his down+a aerial spike can be canceled (and are terrible).

If we assume that the average number of character updates a month is constant there is a 16% chance there is a character update tomorrow and a 40% chance there is one this week.

Metaknight's is so boring. ZSS Final Smash restores her life right? SO MANY QUESTIONS.

Ike's final smash seems weak, it did like 70 damage, but looked really awesome, vs Link/ Metaknight's which have the same idea but instant KO people.

Sonic, yoshi and fox could all easily do 2 KO's with a bit of luck

Link's only does 50% with relatively low knockback (from 0% that is) but looks awesome so that's no problem.

just hope it's not gonna turn out to be all FS's and hope they put the appearance on very high specially for E4A

Yeah but the people playing the demo mostly suck. If you're good at dodging then you can completely avoid Sonic/Yoshi's attacks, but the single hit final smashes are guaranteed as long as you execute it properly.

I don't wanna wait 10 years to play Brawl online.......

    You kids and your sarcasm.

Man I am so not being sarcastic. I seriously didn't think Brawl would have online - that Sakurai would play it against NOA and say "no, this is too laggy, it's not worthwhile to put in desu".
I would never want a game to not have online because it was too laggy. Technology will eventually catch up! I will worry about my own connection speed!

Right now the limitation when it comes to online lag is pretty much the fact that internets can only move at the speed of light. With optimal conditions, there will at least be something like a 65ms ping between two computers on opposite sides of the planet (rough estimate). As it stands, it is realistically much higher.

    Blame yourself or Einstein.

If the internet actually moved at the speed of light we would have no problem. But noooo, who needs fiber everything when we have enough telephone wire to make the Earth a fancy belt?!

Fun fact: light traveling in a flawless direct connection fiberoptic cable the longest distance the earth can provide over flat land (half the earth's circumference) would still take about 190ms.
Half mean circumference of the earth: 20,020km. Speed of light: 300,000km/s. Lag from one side to the other: 67ms.

Good conducting cable at high voltage would be a little slower, but not much.

In the one FFA video on eldin bridge with the dark world music, fox got like 3-4 KO's with the tank and he was stuck on the right side of the level.

I'm split between wanting Megaman in or ZX in. Megaman is just classic and probably my favorite NES series as a kid, but then ZX has the possibility of having X and Zero and all the other models combined. Sigh.

And if you had a direct fiber line to Japan, that would be fine, but really, the big problem is all the shit that your packets need to bounce to and from before getting to the other end.

Isn't one frame 40 ms though (at 25 fps)? So even then you wouldn't get every frame across which is what the competitive level folks want.

well I was thinking 1vs1, not really FFA, because the big FS's (Bowser/fox/sonic/ others?) would prove far more effective ofcourse, where Link's/Ike's would still only hit one person, and so far they didn't really look like instant-KO's to me (if you use the FS-video as reference)

That it seems really unlikely that Nintendo would put two characters from the same company in a game where the characters are "Guest characters" and there's a wide variety of characters from other large companies that Nintendo has worked with in the past. Capcom alone has a ton of character choices they could use.

Castlevania also does not fit into the icon list, so at the very least there are no plans to announce Simon.

There is, of course, always the chance that every company is submitting an unlocked character and a secret one. Konami could give Snake and Simon, Sega could give Sonic and Robotnik, Capcom could give Megaman and either Zero or Leon.

Yes, this is the new shaky and false premise I will use to support my hope that Leon Kennedy is in Brawl.
