One Piece is also one of my favorite mangas. It's a shame that it isn't popular enough in the US to warrant faster releases.

Another one I recently started reading as well is MPD Psycho.

Currently I am finishing my favorites (not all of them, I still have more, but this is off the top of my head.):

Chunchu, Peacemaker, GTO, Chronicles of the Cursed Sword, Girls Bravo, Claymore, Baby and Me, Chibi Vampire, Brave Story, Buso Renkin, Boys Be, Battle Vixens, Battle Club, Bezerk, Black Cat, Disgaea 2, D Gray Man, Crescent Moon, Fruit Basket, Ai Yori Aoshi, Law of Ukei, Yakitate Japan

My Finished series are (again off the top of my head):

Eureka Seven, Imadoki, Seikei Trilogy, A Perfect day for Love Letters, Pita Ten

My suspended series are (top of my head):

    Aria, Geobreeders, Yongbi the Invincible

I would also like to take note, that CPM Manga (who went out of business), ADV Manga and Infinity Studios are one of the worst Manga Translaters and producers there is. ADV/Infinity and CPM have tons of titles that are suspended for no good reason. The reason they give is that places like Borders or Coles won't stock it.

Of course they won't because all of these three companies are/were useless at finishing a series. Anyone know of Aria? Yeah, ADV could only put out 3 volumes, while its going on to 10+ back in Japan. I'm actually thankful that Tokyopop picked it up from them. Infinity had NOW from Comics One, which they decided to revamp and released 1 and 2 and were never heard from again. Any manga titles in their hands are good as lost. Gunslinger Girl is only getting a release now to finish the series. One look at Previews tells you that the only thing ADV is going is trying to either revamp a series or sell them agian while many manga lie on the floor not completed. Infinity don't even get a mention in this months preview I think.

Frankly, any of these two companies (ADV and Infinity) are only good for one shots and thats it. Don't expect any series to be completed for a long, long time.

I really should try to read more manga. All I ever read is the shonen series like Naruto and Bleach. Guess it's like a guilty pleasure.

I'm pretty much going to take this thread to be a "why the hell aren't you reading x, y, and z" thread.

That said, Getbackers was alright and Mahoromatic was cute, but I may be biased because I've seen the anime for both the books.

When he dies, I hope they write "Worst Affirmative Action Hire, EVER" on his grave. His corpse should be trolled.

I find Getbackers to be quite enjoyable. Mahoromatic was quite sad, especially in the last volume. I haven't seen the anime for it yet, but own the DVD so, I wanna watch it.

It's always been my favorite game in the series, so I want to know.

My two manga of choice are Naruto for brain candy and Hellsing for gorgeous art and a dose of complete over the top ridiculousness.

It moves at a glacial pace, but yeah it's still going. I caught up on the past two-ish years, and they're pretty much still having the same battle.

Its pretty good, I mean If you have played the game you'd know the characters better. There aren't 108 stars clearly defined so you'd have to look at them, but otherwise, its pretty good.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the last two volumes (I think they're are only going to be ten) are going to be that battle as well. I mean, it seems to be the final showdown, after all.

If its of any interest, its 11 volumes in total. Not a big investment, but it shouldn't matter cause the manga is good.

that was going to be my next question.

Kohta is maybe one of the slowest/laziest artists on earth and admits (brags?) as much. Can't argue with the results though, I fucking love his art, all 8 pages he makes every 2 months or whatever.

Trigun finished, Dark Horse better hurry up with that now.

We should all probably read Berserk and agonise about how some of us (including the mangaka) may die before it is finished.

And I'm catching up on my Naruto since Viz seems to have decided to forgo waiting for chapters to go out in US Jump before getting the books out. With the exception of the weird jutsu names and pointless censorship, I find the translation solid. Bleach and Death Note got good treatment too.

Off the top of my head (and I'm tired right now) the only other recommendation I can bring right now is Air Gear, which has action and titties. It's by the guy that does Tenjou Tenge though it's not being censored to hell (though it wasn't as smutty to begin with) Better story anyway, I think, Tenjou Tenge was too convoluted, especially for something on a monthly release schedule.

I just picked up "Manga: The Complete Guide" by Jason Thompson from Del Ray. While I totally disagree with his ratings its actually very informative. In addition to all the NA translated manga from way back, including 1931's The Four Immigrants Manga, it has a Yoai, Yuri and Hentai section which was totally awesome for me. Now I have a reference if I wanted to pick something up. It could me 21.75 CDN but it was us price so its 19.95. Totally awesome and what I was looking for.

There are so many great ones it's hard to name them all. 20th Century Boys, Monster and Pluto are some of the best pieces of fiction I've ever read. Air Gear is awesomeness in manga form, Bleach and Naruto are great for some weekly excitement, etc...
Some other reccomendations: Trigun, Death Note, Beck, Nana, Love Hina, I''s, Ichigo 100%, Berserk, Hellsing, Hajime no Ippo, GTO (the trilogy, meaning Bad Company, Shonan Jumai Guni and GTO), Full Metal Alchemist aaand I'll stop.

You could get them from Amazon or go to your book store and ask for them to order it for you if they offer that sort of program. I usually ask B&N to order it for me.

Vol. 5 was released last month as well.

Hey dudes, what are some of the manga that mostly eschew the more annoying manga tropes like sweatdrops, face faults, comedic violence or tantrums, etc. In other words, what are some "serious" manga?

Vagabond, Blame!, Homunculus, Battle Royale, Monster, off the top of my head. There's plenty of seinen stuff like that, the sweatdrops and stuff tends to be in manga aimed at a younger audience.

Are you interested in samurai and or feudal Japan? There is a ton of really high quality stuff available if that is something you are interested in-- Blade of the Immortal, Lone Wolf and Cub, Lady Snowblood, Samurai Executioner, Path of the Assassin... the last four of those are all by Kazuo Koike.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is still a bit silly, but that is because it is incredibly and amazingly over-the-top with its weirdness, which has very little to do with any of the things you mentioned.

Let me put it like this: The least bizarre thing in the story is a guy decapitating a horse and hiding himself inside of it in less than ten seconds. Things only get weirder from that point.

Scott Pilgrim is kind of manga? I also enjoyed the Sandman-Death manga-esque thing.

The only "authentic" Japanese shit I've read is Nausicaa, Lum and Ranma 1/2.

A lot of books poeple have mentioned so far I've seen the cartoons of, does that make me some kind of heathen? I especially dug the Getbackers and Planetes shows. Well, until Getbackers became a series of repetitive fight scenes.

It is extremely nutty. Really, it is everything its name advertises and more. But it's also absolutely fantastic, full of very likeable characters, badasses and terrific villains and weird, but interesting and strangely appealing, character designs even by manga and anime standards.
