I don't quite like the pace of the game - it seems to be slower than C3 (I miss the constant firing rate of C3's weapons). I'll still pick it up though, looks to be a blast.

They went for a compromise. If you hold the button down, then you get a continuous fire, but it's slower than if you just hammer the button like the old days. Said they wanted a "run 'n gun," not "run 'n aim" shooter.

I hope they have co-op because it'd melt my heart to play through with good old dad again, except this time, NOT die.

Good news/bad news there. Good news is that Contra 4 has co-op. Bad news is that Contra and Super C won't. They'd have had to mess with the source code to do it, and apparently Japan is really protective of that stuff (remember Yuji Naka's NiGHTS engine and Sonic Xtreme? Bet this is why Mega Man Mania for the GBA never came out, either).

I'm kinda surprised that 2 and 3 aren't on there.

    is Super C 2?

It is indeed. Kind of a shame that they didn't include 3 and Operation C on there, to have the whole pre-Contra 4 timeline intact. But I doubt there will be many complaints.

Just hope that TRU has some Marios for me to take them up on this deal with.

One thing developers out in this game originally, but have since removed, is 4-PLAYER SIMULTANEOUS PLAY! Holy shit that would be insane, and probably really confusing, which I assume is why they removed it. Also, I wonder how the screen gap will be handled. I hope it's barely noticable.

It's handled as if there was space there (no instant appearance of things going between screens).

Dammit. Does this come out today or tomorrow?

I got Mario Galxy with the free $25 gift card, but they didn't know anything about Contra 4.

    Wait wait wait wait

A GAF poster talking about the EGM of this game says the following:
I'm back. The Contra IV review, all the reviewers agree that it feels like a lost 16-bit Contra sequel warped forward through time. Shane's only complaint is unavoidable deaths because of the screen gap. The second reviewer agrees slightly, saying there are sometimes snipers and stuff POSITIONED in the gap, and you can't even see THEM. But he says the challenges are awesome, and by completing them you can unlock several other, classic Contra games. Sam, the third reviewer, says the game is great, and you can LEARN to avoid the blind spots.

Why have I not heard of this before? This changes my buying priority if there are indeed unlockable versions of earlier Contras. Can anyone corroborate this? I haven't been paying complete attention to this game.

    what, holy shit.

Is it the arcade version of Contra, or the NES version, or what?

I already own the arcade Contra in Konami Arcade Classics for my DS, so I'd be more interested if it was the NES version of the game.

From the screenshots in the official site, it looks like the NES version (or, at least, not the arcade original).

Does this game have single cart multiplayer??? i.e. can you run through the normal game with just one cart between 2 DS's??

If so, this game is so bought, if not, then this game will probably be bought for Christmas

  • Mustachio JonesMustachio Jones Registered User regular
    Multicart only, I'm afraid.

However, buy it anyway. I consider myself pretty good at the original Contra triolgy, and have had the game since 3pm this afternoon. Only seen the fourth level once.

    Gentlemen, this game is hard.

just got home with it, haven't put it in yet...

it has NES versions of Contra and Super C, from what I've read.

I can't wait to play this. And if I know Konami like I know Konami, this game won't be around long, so I refused to wait.

Comparing the games side by side, the controlling is a bit alien and sluggish at first, and the controls seem a little odd. A couple runs of Jungle though, and you'll start to acclimate to it. I did, atleast, and I spent my four day weekend playing through the Contra trilogy with a friend of mine.

Contra and Super C can be unlocked by completing certain amounts of Challenge Missions, a mode which is unlocked upon the completion of the game on any difficulty.

    Edit:

Also, veterans of the series will note the usefulness of the laser, and then wave their hands about and freak out.

Man, this game is a lot harder than I remember Contra or Super C being. Like, kick you in the crotch, then rape your grandmother hard. D:

That's what I've heard from the reviews. It's definitely old-school. Speaking of which, has anybody tried the Konami code?

died like a billion times on the first level (3 game overs, to be more specific) and put it down. this is going to take some work.

I hope it is like the others in that once I've learned a level I know where each enemy is coming from. It should be like that I suppose.

The Konami code is indeed in the game. Pause the game, enter it, both your weapons get upgraded. Only works in Normal and Hard, though.

Couple things to remember if you're going to use it:
-Doesn't work if you've got one stage 1 and one stage 2 gun
-Can only be used once per life
-If you try to use it more than once, you die.

I'll beat this game on Normal, I swear it.

Just give me a few months. :|

I like how all four characters have exactly the same voice.

  • Mustachio JonesMustachio Jones Registered User regular
I was livid. I have never been so angry in my life. Beginning of Stage 4: 8 lives, all four continues, stage2 spread and machine gun. Okay, so I died 8 times, whatever. Screen goes black. Stage music is still playing. Nothing is happening. the game. it froze. I cried.

Then I had to scratch my nose and died. That was quite enjoyable.

My highest score so far is 84050 on Normal.

  • TyrantCowTyrantCow Registered User regular
I still do not have this game.
This fact annoys me to no end.

  • TyrantCowTyrantCow Registered User regular
    Contra get!

Yeah, normal is kinda tough. It feels great to be weaving in and out of bullets in mid-jump again, though.

Tell me there's a way to skip the music after you run out of lives, though. This will drive me insane.

  • TelMarineTelMarine Registered User regular
damn this game is pretty hard (on normal), the two screens makes things hectic. It took me almost an hour to find this game, most stores had it dated for next week.

  • TelMarineTelMarine Registered User regular
also playing on hard mode changes the music (remix of the original)

If you mash start fast enough, you can shave off those precious milliseconds. Otherwise, one of the only design flaws in the game.
