Family Ski Wii: all the fun of skiing [minus the frostbite and $8 beers]
I noticed a fair bit of excitement in the Wii Fit thread about the fact that the balance board will be used to control some skiing mini-games. As an avid skier myself, I've used imitations of 'skiing' for dryland training and it definitely piqued my interest.
Well, it turns out there's another ski game coming our way: Family Ski. I'd written it off as a shovelware POS pretty quickly. And then I saw this:
Notice that nifty little image in the middle down on the bottom? That would be the Wii balance board. Interest +many right there, so I decided to find out a bit more about the game and was happily surprised to discover that it doesn't look half bad (you know - for a Wii game olol). Observe:
I could find pretty much nothing aside from that scan and some screenshots, but the quality of the images and the promise of a full-on balance board skiing game caught my attention right quick. I'll be keeping an eye on this one, and updating with impressions of the balance board controls as more details become available. I may make this a general 'waggle/lean ski thread' if the WiiFit version has some meat to it and there's interest, but we'll see how stuff develops.
I'm guessing she's following a map to some lodge, but who really knows? For all I know the Hamburgler is an unlockable character and that's showing her how close she is to getting it.
wait a minute, $8 beers? who the hell drinks while on a ski trip?
Have you ever looked around a ski lodge, or an on-slope restaurant? Beer is just as overpriced as everything else, and almost every middle aged person in the room is knocking one back with lunch. Maybe that's only around here, though.
When you think about it snowbaording wouldnt work well on the wii fit board. Its two feet parallel to each other, thats skiing. Snowboarding has one foot behind the other. And you cant spin the wii board like you need for snowbaoarding. For skiing its just tilting.
snowboarding would be just as easy as skis. just place the balance board perpendicular to the screen. lifting your heels or leaning forward would result in carving towards the right, raising your toes would take you to the left.
i'm not sure how tricks would work though. I wonder if jumping on the balance board would wreck it...
Yeah. Maybe I'm being presumptuous, but I really doubt this will be as good as the skiing in Wii Fit or the full snowboard/skiing game Nintendo makes if they do.

Guek already said it --
Snowboarding is perfectly possible, just turn the board perpendicular to the screen. This is how it's being done in the Wii Fit minigame.
I'll skip this one and wait for the INEVITABLE SSX title that uses the balance board.
For some reason I thought that said "INEVITABLE SEX title" and I was all :winky: you know what with the balance board and all there are possibilities.
They don't call in the Wii for nothin...
*ducks*
Anyway, I'd actually like to see more games like this. The more games that use the balance board the better in my opinion because that thing is awesome. And for sports games like this who can resist?
I suppose lame people. With llama faces. They can resist. Because they like brussel sprouts.

How would you switch from regular to goofy though? If they made an attachment that let you strap the board to your feet so you could olly and then reverse stance midair, then we'd be talking...
Snow boarding would be horribly horribly dangerous on the board. For those of us not blessed with good balance putting one foot in front of the other would result in accidents if we got too in to the game.

You don't put one foot in front of the other. You stand sideways. Feet approximately shoulder width apart, knees slightly bent. It's about the most stable standing position a human can muster unless he has a third leg.
I have always been a fan of most of the SSX franchise (on PS2) and when I saw that there was one for the Wii I took the plunge and bought it. I'm not sure if it was all the beer I drank at work before I bought it, or what, but I couldn't for the life of me figure that game out. It was terrible. I had it for maybe a week and only played it once before I returned it.

for shame! blur was pretty rad, all around. I never quite understood why people had so much trouble with the controls but my suspicions lie with the shitty tutorial
This being Wii family ski, i hope the burger doesn't mean the kids are shouting at your character (mom) that they want to stop for lunch, even though you just got on the slopes and it's not even 11 yet and they're whining that their feet are tired and they want hot chocolate and all you want to do is just ski in peace for a little while without their incessant nattering jabbing like needles into your brain

I bet they could make it so if you jump, spin around midair, then land back on the Wii Fit Board goofy, you character could mimic the action, especially if you're holding the Wiimote to give the game midair verification. The board seems pretty sensitive to pressure (remember those posture demos?), so I bet it could register whether you're standing regular or goofy.
I've been considering getting Blur as I can get it for pretty cheap new ($20). How troublesome are the controls, really?
The ubertrick motions are the only thing that is troublesome. The rest is handled really well. You can jump with a gesture or use a button, and you can set the ratio of how much you want your turning to be influenced by motion or control stick (i.e., leaning more for the tight turns, or doing nothing but tilting, or using only the control stick, or some combination).
The ubertricks are annoying because it doesn't always sense the shapes you draw very well. The secret is moving your whole arm in the shape rather than trying to "draw" it on the screen with just your wrist, but it still can be difficult.
Also don't do the tutorial stuff at all because it is horrible and cumbersome and actually punishing. Just jump into a free run and try stuff out.

Even for $20, I'd say rent before you buy. I remember in the thread we had here when it came out a lot of people did like the game, but there were also a few (myself included) that just couldn't get the controls. I sold my copy to a fellow forumer after like a week.

It depends on how authentic they want the experience to be.

I laughed way too hard at this.
As an avid snowboarder, I fart in this game's general direction!
...though it does look pretty neat. and purdy too.

Safety the mauling bear would not be pleased.
These kinds of games are what's going to make me get the balance board. WiiFit, not so much (personally).

In fact, the damn Wii Fit board is a board. You'd think Snowboarding would be the first thing they'd go to.

The trick in the second screenshot is a cockscrew. I love English words written in Japanese characters.

You're an avid snowboarder and you don't guzzle beer 24 hours a day when you're at the piste?
Incredulous the skeptic bear is suspicious.

I hope, for Nintendo's sake, that it's sturdy. That's probably going to be the first thing american kids do to it.
The first thing American kids will do is stand on it. Do you see where I'm going with this?

Third leg :winky:
Then again I'm hardly the most stable of people.

well i've also had the pleasure of being a minor for the majority of the seasons i've been boarding
but it still doesn't sound like a good idea.
