Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!
I need a new web host. I had signed up for a few months with http://www.webserve.ca/ because they are Canadian, have cheap bandwidth, and SUPPOSEDLY gave SSH access.
After about a month of trying to get them to deliver on their advertised claims (which I paid for), I cancelled my agreement with them, and they refused to issue me a refund, the fuckers. That was a few months ago. Now, however, I'm back on the market and looking to find a new web host that won't bend me over like these last guys did.
My criteria:
1. Relatively cheap, i.e. not going to charge me shitloads for very little bandwidth
2. Must have PHP and access to a cgi-bin.
3. Apache webserver
4. Offers POP, IMAP, and SMTP mail servers
5. Is Canadian*
6. Good customer relations
*I'd like to be able to pay in Canadian dollars, and not have my web host subject to American laws, but this isn't a deal breaker.
So, does anyone know of any webhost that fits the bill?
1. Their plans might look expensive in comparison to those hosts that advertise "unlimited" bandwidth for dirt cheap, but this is just realism. They don't oversell bandwidth and then wonder why their servers are choking. I like that.
2. Got it. I host my blog with them, and it uses PHP. I have a cgi-bin too, though I don't use it.
3. Got it (see "detailed features" sidebar on the Features page)
4. Got it.
5. No, but...
6. Got it. The head of the company personally visits the support forums and can regularly be seen responding to customers' posts. I have submitted one or two support tickets, and received replies / issues were resolved within a few hours. Further, they guarantee you a refund if you change your mind about hosting with them in the first 30 days. If you go longer and then decide you want to cancel, they will give you a refund on your last payment if you made one within the last 30 days. (See "30 Day Guarantee" at the bottom of the Hosting page)
My site that's hosted with them is stolenthunder.net . I don't have any complaints about them, and have also recommended them on the forums at [H]ard|OCP. There is a referral deal that will give me billing credit if you fill in my domain in the Referrer box on the order form... and that would be nice. But I wouldn't be pimping them if my own experience wasn't good. It wouldn't be worth the effort if you sign up only to decide they're not good and cancel.
Do they take Visa or Paypal, or something different?
the website has big, colorful images for Visa, MasterCard, and PayPal, so i imagine so
also, you should check out http://www.webhostingtalk.com/ for more general web hosting stuff. it's a pretty good forum community focused on web hosting options and the like.
