Perhaps one of the best names for a movie ever. Plus Daniel Day Lewis is a fucking monster on the screen. It will be either totally fucking awesome, or way too long and boring. It's a tossup!

Considering it's PTA, I want to go with the latter. However, Gangs of New York was long and Daniel Day Lewis made the time fly by. I really need to see this. The trailer was perfect. It just throws up "There Will Be Blood" at the end. Didn't seem like other trailers, somehow.

NOOOOOOOOOO! I didn't even realize that it was PTA! FUCK! The man doesn't produce total garbage, but when his movies are bad, they are soooo fucking bad. Punch Drunk Love and Magnolia were some of the most frustrating pieces of shit I've seen in a long time. If it wasn't for Boogie Nights, I would have wrote the man off entirely.

The second film was near unwatchable due tot he shakey cam. Ultimatum seemed to get it about right, using camera wobble to reinforce mood rather than just looking like the camera man had been drinking.

Why is Superbad winning over Knocked Up?! Does not compute! Even Juno is arguably better than Superbad. It had less... lagging. Superbad was great. Don't get me wrong! It just wasn't amazing, and I felt too many parts went without significant plot... anything, or good humor, or they just dragged on.

300 should at least be respected for its artistic value and the choreography. The issue of respect fo rall the hard work that went into it. I suppose that's valid. However, I'm more infatuated with the fight scenes and camera work. Yes, it was trite and over the top. That's not all there is, however. Juno was fantastic, but the whole intro scene was... stupid.

And the Bourne series was cool. But not much else. Not really stand out as an action movie... It's like admiring Halo for Master Chief alone.

What? Knocked Up was hilarious, much more so than Superbad. See it with your girlfriend, you'll enjoy it more.

Anyways, I have to 2007 was such a shitty year for films. There have been some greats but overall still shitty.

I wholly disagree. 2007 is seeing some great releases.

    Smokin' Aces
    Black Snake Moan
    300
(I don't care what you say.)
I Think I Love My Wife
    Grindhouse
    ATHF
    Next
    28 Weeks Later
    Shrek the 3rd
    Pirate's of the Caribbean 3
    (Sorry... I liked it.)
    Knocked Up
    Die Hard
    Ratatouille
    Transformers
    Sunshine
    The Bourne Ultimatum
Stardust (Yes... shoot me if you want.)
    Superbad
    3:10 to Yuma
    Across the Universe
    Michael Clayton
    Lars and The Real Girl
    Gone, Baby Gone
    Dan in Real Life
    No Country for Old Men
    Beowulf (As a comedy)
    Juno
    Atonement
    I Am Legend

All fantastic movies, and they all came out this year. And, it gets better, because I've yet to see Sweeney Todd, Charlie Wilson's War, AvP: Requiem or There Will Be Blood.

It might not be the biggest list from a year, but it's certainly sizable, and it's not counting a bunch of other crap that some people might really like.

    Like Hairspray.

Nobody is going to fault you for singling out one of the best movies of the year, but Smokin' Aces? That was rubbish. It had so much potential. A story about a magician fighting off assassins and ended up being just so very dull.

Yeah, Smokin' Aces... total Hollywood shit trying to pass itself off as a QT wannabe film. Anyways, James's list just proves how bad 2007 was. There was some fun films but nothing truly truly outstanding IMHO.

You can make a damn decent argument that it's movie of the year.

American Gangster and Hot Fuzz are pretty much tied for it, in my opinion.

I'd say for action movie, you could do no better then Die hard 4. Willis shows why he set the tempo for action, I recommend the unrated dvd just for a truer essence of Die Hard, but even the pg-13 version was enjoyable. You have a lot of nice physical stunts, minimal cgi, and a decent villain in Timothy Olyphant. Justing Long worked good as the wise cracking side kick, and it even had Kevin Smith playing well Kevin Smith.

I liked Bourne, but the story, or complete lack there of with a lack luster ending kind of soured me to it. Compared to the previous 2 Bournes, the third was the weakest link, not a bad movie just didn't appeal.

Viggo Mortensen was definately my favorite actor, his role in Eastern Promises was fantastic, and I don't think many leading males of his age would be willing to do the bath house scene, shit I'd say no one would be willing to do that kind of exposure.

Comedy was Hot Fuzz by far, that movie cracked me up, and it had a more depth to its jokes on top of the obvious ones, so that helped keep me at least smiling throughout.

Best movie of the year? For me it would be Die Hard 4 because I am a massive Willis fan, but if I had to pick a good oscar contendor type film, Eastern Promises would be that film.

Well, what's outstanding? If your standard for "good year" only counts as "Must have within released one of the top ten films ever" then maybe it was a bad year.

2006 saw Pan's Labyrinth, Thank you for Smoking, Little Miss Sunshine, Children of Men, The Fountain... Maybe Man of the Year and V for Vendetta if you liked those, too.

2007 doesn't seem really that bad at all. Maybe if you laboriously reviewed every movie of the past 50 years, perhaps 2007 would be lower on the list, but it doesn't seem outstandingly weak.

I mentioned Pirates because I saw it and liked it. I didn't see Zodiac. I will if you tell me it was good, but only maybe. It really didn't look good. It looked cheesy. And shitty. And Pirates 3 could have been so much, so much a lot fucking better, probably if it weren't tied to Disney, but it was still all right.

I, uh... I wasn't really in love with The Simpson's Movie. It was just... it... It was like a nude scene from an actor that had only been pretty a long time ago. In fact, it was very much like that. There even was nudity.

-Comedy: Superbad. I don't think I need to elaborate much on this one.

-Action: A toss up between 300 and Death Proof. I know most people won't agree with me on Death Proof, but I absolutely loved it. Getting to know all of those girls in the first half

Agreed. Superbad was great, one of the few comedies that the hype really lived up to. And for Death Proof, a lot of people were put off by all the talking for the first 3/4 of the movie, but I thought everything building up to that final chase was time well-spent.

The talking in Death Proof was okay the first time around, but for the second group of women it was just overly long and forced. It was especially tedious after watching the non-stop action of Planet Terror.

How did it look cheesy and shitty exactly? It's an excellent, low-key, very sleek and unique police procedural/newspaper drama. It's not a typical killer movie, it's all about what the people surrounding the case (and not just police) go through. Which is interesting because it's set in the 70's (and looks perfect, it's a hell of a period piece) and there's no computers around obviously. It's a nice comment on how far things have come. I mean, you can't go wrong with David Fincher, either. My film of the year without question.

At World's End on the other hand was just a miserable movie going experience. It was almost unwatchable it was so terrible, I'm amazed at how bad they screwed up a movie with such a cool premise.

It was definitely better than Shaun of the Dead. The problem is that the UK these days is only good at making depressing or heavily moralising dramas (or both). Comedy hasn't truly been good since, well, the Ealing days.
