I read it on my own time. I never got to read 1984 in school. I haven't read Lord of the Flies either.

But they made me choke down The Scarlet Letter twice. Fuck that book.

1984's a good book to read but a bad book to discuss

because anything you have to say about it has been said a thousand times over

    The Scarlet Letter was shit.

Animal Farm was great, Lord of the Flies was great.

Animal Farm was great. A little too allegorical for my tastes, but I found it very darkly funny.

1984 was the most utterly horrifying book I've ever read. It basically illustrates how homo sapiens could end up shedding every last scrap of its humanity forever, and you can see how completely possible it is. It's like swallowing just a teaspoon of the mind-breaking cosmic horror Lovecraft was always going on about.

So, does anybody know what 'Petra Ad Infinitum' on the new Rock Band shirt translates to? I've already ordered one because it looks awesome (despite Rock Band not being out here yet :( ), so I hope it doesn't say 'Cocks Forever' or something.

  • Munkus BeaverMunkus Beaver Registered User, ClubPA regular
I read animal farm three or four times in the fifth and sixth grade.

1984...my God, you get to the middle of that book and you're done with life until you finish that book.

    Engage inductive reasoning module:

"Petrify" means "become a rock" or "become like a rock"

    Therefore "Petra" probably means "rock"

    Probable translation:

    ROCK FOREVER

1984 was good but it was too surreal for my tastes. I had the same problem with Neuromancer.

Fuck I need to read Neuromancer. Actually I just need to read some fiction in general, I've been reading plenty of non-fiction but I keep getting stuck on the second part of Day Watch otherwise.

Ahh, I figured that's probably what it was, but I did not make that etymological connection to confirm it, thankyou!

Neuromancer was great because it was a great setting, not because the writing itself was that wonderful. That's a problem with most of Gibson's writing. The Difference Engine is another good example. Great setting, awful writing.

  • ShortyShorty JUDGE BROSEF Registered User regular
Neuromancer had decent writing. Not great, but good. Like I said, it's far too surreal for my tastes. William Gibson can only write well once in awhile though. He did a good job in Virtual Light.

I'm having a damn hard time getting into Neuromancer. It just feels way too dated and long-time-ago-dude-writing-about-shit-that-already-happened-pretty-much-but-not-anything-like-how-it-actually-is-hyphen

  • DefenderDefender Registered User regular
Arguably, 1984 should have that same problem. I mean, 1984 clearly came and went and that shit did not happen.

I think Idiocracy's similar. That would never actually happen, but the exaggeration is needed to make the point.

Some of the "lingo" sounds a bit dated now, but that's only because it's been overused by every hack to ride Gibson's coattails. I still love the descriptive writing style, definitely one of his strongest points.

Also if you've never read it, I loved Arthur C. Clarke's The City and the Stars.

    Ah yes 80's cyberpunk.

Read Bruce Sterling's "Schismatrix". You may need to get it at the library because its been out of print (published in 1986 I think). It doesn't feel dated because it expands the solar system.

Sterling was cyberpunkqueer friends with Gibson, but I think he was a better and more concise writer. Schismatrix hard cover is about 200 pages if I remember correctly, but there are like 5 new ideas on every page.

I remember playing Neuromancer on the Amiga, and the only way I was able to finish it was read the executable file in a hex editor and search for strings, looking for the passwords to computer systems you had to hack into. I still to this day have no idea if that's what you were supposed to do or not. I played the game for hours and hours looking for the passwords but I swear to god they were NOT IN THE GAME ANYWHERE.

I still find that pretty amusing.
