So, can I go ahead and call the twinked out combat god Dawn Caste? Every game of Exalted I've ever seen has at least one, and I think it'd be neat to play it myself :)

Speaking of which, I totally forgot about the whole "Extras" aspect of combat.

Which can be summed up as "you are fighting against enemies who really aren't worth taking the time to run combat with. So describe yourself killing them in the most badass way possible."

So are the different exalted "classes" (sorry if I just ruined the game) comparable in power? Like is a Lunar as Good as a Solar as good as one of those evil things?

    *head explodes*

Actually no, the Exalts all have varying power levels

It goes like this (strongest to weakest)

Solars / Abyssals, Lunars, Sidereals, Terrestrials

HOWEVER it does matter very much on the individual exalt. Sidereals with Blade of the Battle Maiden from Obsidian Shards of Infinity martial arts are ridiculous, and Solars don't have to be awesome at combat (though they're generally awesome at something, never met a Solar generalist)

Not quite no, they're different breeds of people altogether. See, in Exalted, "game balance" doesn't exist mechanically. Frankly, it's not the point. This is about Big Damn Mythic Heroes, and not all Big Damn Mythic Heroes are created equal. Dragonblooded, for example, start out on kind of (if you tweak them) equal footing with the Celestials, but in one on one terms, are quickly outclassed. This is balanced out by the fact that the Dragonblooded are the most numerous of the Exalted and the ones who control the dominant Empire in the lands. The Solars are the biggest and baddest, seeing as they were the hand picked God Kings of the Universe (tm) in ye ancient times. Now, that said, they're not invulnerable. They have to regain a lot of their power what with only recently having their essences released back into the world to reincarnate, but when they get up there in experience levels they trump everybody.

'Cept Abyssals, who are twisted Solars.

    Edit: Beat'd.

I'd say calling the different types of Exalts "classes" is misleading; that's much closer to "races," in that it's generally written in stone, and you have or are denied access to your abilities and powers on the basis of your exaltation type. Your "class" would be your caste, which is more of the area you specialize in. Debatably, the best Solar Caste is Twilight (or, from a different angle, Eclipse), and the worst is Dawn or Zenith (personally, I think I could make a much better Twilight Caste combatant than Dawn Caste).

Also, I would place Lunars on the same power level as Solars. The difference is that Lunars are generalists, whereas Solars are specialists. Lunars can be extremely good at a huge variety of things, whereas Solars tend to be very good at a lot of things, and holy shit at a couple of things.

I remember making a Twilight caste member who had a DDV somewhere around 13 or so due to either a martial arts form or a scene-long charm.

And if someone did have an unblockable attack charm, I could use one of the invulnerable defense charms to dodge it anyway.

And offensively could do about 13 lethal damage base. Which is nothing compared to someone with a grand daiklave, but still pretty damned good.

Lunars can be REALLY mean. They're the only Exalted I know of that can get extra actions at Essence 2. They do get pretty bitched up at character creation though. Seriously, having to divide up a pool of 8 between Knacks and Charms is retarded. This typically leaves you with the same number of Charms or less than the amount Dragon Blooded start with. DRAGON BLOODED. :|

Man, every time I give the Core Book a quick read-through, my urge to play just rises exponentially.

If the game goes off here instead of somewhere else, I'd be highly interested in running a night caste hunter type character, most likely guild aligned. And daggers. He will throw daggers. Lots of daggers. So many daggers that you could redo the arrow scene from 300 with him alone.

I love how all the weapon types in Exalted are suitably awesome. The shit that is throwing in DnD makes me sad(Barring things like throw anything).

Cynic Jester, you slay me. I was going ask to take the role of the Night Caste - Thrown Master - Dagger Guy. His name was going to be Jack Knife. He seemed rather cool in my head.

Instead, however, I guess I could be the Zenith Caste. For Combat I'll go MA, and use Snake Style, because Snake Style is rather rad.

I would have loved to play a Sidereal, but if not available then so be it.

    Current Character concept: Vagrant Monk.
    Name: goes by "Root"
    Caste: Zenith

Honestly, throwing is pretty much the worst combat tree. By far. Archery, melee, and martial arts all have way more to offer.

And INNS, the non-combat charms in Exalted are fucking spectacular.

From a sheer damage output standpoint, maybe. But it sometimes is hard to carry around a giant freaking daiklaive or powerbow wherever you go. The added advantage of thrown weapons is concealability, especially useful to Night caste.

There's a charm that any Solar Exalt can easily access that allows them to dematerialize and rematerialize even a Grand Daiklave at will. There's a variation for bows too as I recall. Concealability isn't much of an issue for the Solar Exalted, so no, Thrown still pretty much blows. The Charms are simply comparitively worthless. :(

Dude, fuck "dematerializing" and "rematerializing." There are archery charms that allow you to pull a bow or flamewand made of pure essence out of your ass, that will kick the shit out of any of the artifact powerbows in the book.

Really? Wouldn't surprise me, the artifact power bows in the book are pretty amazingly shitty. Daiklaves on the other hand are just fine, I can't imagine why anyone would use those "create a Daiklave" Charms.

Edit: Though there is a Wood Aspect Hearthstone in Oadenol's Codex that can make a pretty fine Powerbow. +3L damage I believe it gives.

Do you know what I love the absolute most about Exalted?

    Vindictive Comcubine's Pillow-Book Understanding.

Where ELSE are you going to find names like that for powers?! And it perfectly describes the power, too. "I know every inch of your body and your armor can't stop me from getting to it."

Or, well, ANYTHING else in the Dreaming Pearl Cortesan tree. It's an entire Celestial martial art revolving around murdering people with your clothing.

Or "Pounding Hammer of Devastation Technique", from the Solar Hero form.

Or, from Celestial Monkey Style, there's "Four Halo Golden Monkey Palm."

Sidereals have a Ride Charm called "Breaking the Wild Mortal." It doesn't actually let you use the person as a horse (though that'd be awesome), but it DOES create an actual bit and bridle for them that they then allow you to put on them without fighting you.

Sidereal Martial Arts are so fucking insane, too. Someone above mentioned that, I think. Let's provide an example.

They have a form, the first Sidereal martial art detailed in the Scroll of the Monk, called Border of Kaleidoscopic Logic Style. Essentially, "I punch you and your mind breaks." It's got Charms that can cause someone to believe they are utterly godlike (and admittedly, for a few minutes, they indeed are, but the bonuses wear off and they refuse to see that), can make someone see every single person they meet as a random person from their memory... permanently. If they meet the same person three times, they'll see three different faces for that person. The pinnacle Charm of this tree is called Meditative Battlefield Escalation. Essentially, he makes a pocket realm out of his desires, and brings everyone within line of sight that he chooses to bring into it, with no way to resist. Then he decides what the rules of that little pocket realm are, and he enters combat and the realm exists until there are no enemies to fight or he is defeated.

Selective conception. Sex and breeding play a large roll in some Exalted games (mostly Dragon-Blooded), that's also why being sterile is a flaw. Being unable to sire offspring can destroy a young dynast's life-prospects, basically if you can't have children you're likely to be either completely socially ostracised or shipped off to become a monk.
