You could do it to gold too, so I used it to hoard thousands of gold to spend at my leisure.
Also, the online play turned into everyone having the same gear and being able to go and beat Diablo at level 3 because they were so geared out from duplications.
I forget how it works now.
But it involved dropping a stat boosting potion on the ground, going to pick it up, then immediately doing something with the potions on your belt. I think you pick one of them up right as you pick up the stat pot? If you do it right, the potion you get from your belt becomes the pot you picked up, so you have one in hand and one in the inventory.

This was done on purpose by Blizzard because of the fact that it was so overpowered in Diablo.
I just remember stumbling onto a random Diablo server and some dudes duped me that and the Grandfather blade, I believe.
