Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!

Free poker is pretty lame. You learn nothing about real gambling.

Not totally true. I've played in a couple of free satellites on pokerstars, and towards you get some decent play. At the beginning you have to duck bullets all day, though.

You obviously can't pick up tells, but you can pick up betting patterns pretty fucking quick.

I'm not even talking about tells. The whole "putting someone all-in" means very little when you are playing with fake money. You'll learn the mechanics of the game but not much more.

And worse, you can pick up some very poor betting habits. You play how you practice, and free poker leads to cavalier betting, which is a recipe for disaster in "real" poker.

It means something when you're down to 10 people and 6 get a paid trip to Vegas to play in a tournament.

But just playing in play money tournaments is useless.

Which is why I said, "Free poker is pretty lame. You learn nothing about real gambling."

Eh. I didn't pay anything to get in those sats., so I consider it free poker. And coming in 8th out of 12000 isn't too fucking bad.

Aren't all casino games "rate of loss" games? At least, the ones you play against the house?

I am so piss poor at blackjack, if you see me coming just go play penny slots for 10 minutes until I'm broke.

No. You play blackjack against the house, for example, and it is only a "rate of loss" game if you're playing it wrong. Also, while you don't play poker against the house (strictly speaking), they do take part of the pot.

Basically what I'm saying is that you're right in implying that virtually all games result in a "rate of loss", no matter how you play them.

The last poker game I played was 2 weeks ago, and that was a friendly cash game amongst poor friends.

I bought in for $10, lost that, bought in for $5 more, ended up making $5 and getting my $10 back, so I left with $20. Towards the end though it was just me and one of my better friends and we were playing Follow the Queen, 7 Card Stud, In Between the Sheets, and a couple of others.

Not bad, but I am looking forward to a bigger tournament coming up that some cops throw every couple of months.

Lost $40 at the $2/4 Hold 'Em table. But those $40 lasted me 5 hours of talking with interesting folks and watching the uptight guys yell at the people who didn't know how to play.

    Worth it I think

I made $2500 in a week playing $2.50/$5.00 pot limit Hold 'Em, would have been $4000 if some guy didn't hit a one outer against me on the river, was still a really good week though.
Over the next two weeks I lost like $1200 on hands when I was >90% favorite.
