PC games: I want to play them now - which ones?!

I've built a new computer for the first time since EverQuest's 2nd expansion came out. Though it lasted me through Warcraft 3 and struggled through WoW, I feel like I have missed out on and ignored at least about 5 years of PC gaming. So I ask you people, what have I been missing?

So far my list is: The Orange Box and the Dawn of War games.

What are the highlights, the must-haves? Any and all genres welcome.

    Bioshock is sublime.
Call of Duty 4 has incredible multiplayer, and really fun (but I guess relatively short) single player.
If you can run Crysis, you should.

Orange Box is really the first thing you should play though. If you haven't played Half-life 2, start there.

Company of Heroes and it's expansion. Easily the greatest RTS made so far

Though you should really play the Dawn of War games beforehand, because if you don't it will be harder to go back to them

I've got to concur with Bioshock. Crysis was great and gave me a good amount of replayability, although it and Bioshock both have weak third acts in their singleplayer campaigns. Psychonauts is a must buy. 1701 is also the game that made me lose more hours without realizing it than any other.

1701 - "You have been playing for 2 hours."
ME - "It's 10. I should sign off to go make dinner."
1701 - "You have been playing for 4 hours."
ME - "Its midnight, I need to get to sleep to get up for work."
1701 - "You have been playing for 6 hours."
ME - "Ok, its time to turn it off"
ME - "Ok, save and exit. Shit, it's 3."

I just got a new rig myself (Jan) and am having a blast with Company of Heroes/The Witcher/Crysis. The Witcher's prolly the best RPG I've played in a couple of years, including all consoles.

Good catch. I'm still waiting for a game to come out that has better voice acting than Freespace 2. HL2 and it's episodes are close, but still not it.

I think some of these are older than he needs, if he only feels he's missed about 5 years. I think Planescape is old as hell, isn't it?

Regardless, I second Max Payne 1&2 like crazy. You also need Neverwinter Nights 2.

Really, though, Dawn of War and Company of Heroes are by far the best RTS's to ever exist. Get them.

These lists are fantastic, thanks everyone. And even though there's no reason I couldn't have played them by now, some of these older games have managed to sneak under my radar as well.

Yeah, it's PCGamer UK. They tend to publish featured articles a month or two after they've been printed. That top 100 list is last years though, this years one hasn't been printed yet.

If you like Dawn of War you'll probably enjoy Company of Heroes (in my opinion, it's DoW in WWII with even more polish). Also, I can't sell Crysis enough - if you can run it, it's the best sandbox FPS in a long time. If you can't run Crysis, Far Cry is really good at capturing that "You're a commando, tackle this situation however you like" feel.

Also, The Godfather is actually a pretty fun GTA-type game, though if you didn't like the gang war aspects of GTA:San Andreas you might not find it all that great. I loved the player customization, and it really never got old, gunning down folks in the streets. I honestly found it more appealing than Mafia, which I thought was pretty boring except for a few small parts.

Max Payne 2 and Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory are two of the most cinematic gaming experiences I've ever played - you would really be missing out by not pursuing these. You can probably find each for $20 now.

Myself, I hate seeing all these lists. In his position, I'd rather you sold me on the games than type up a shopping list that I'll probably never use.

It's an easy game to hate

"Sins of a Solar Empire" and "Company of Heroes" are the only two RTS games you will ever need.

CoH is the fast paced awesome that finally broke me out of my turtling instinct and lead to fucking awesome wins based on subterfuge, lightning speed, and being a badass. There's nothing like fighting off a numerically superior foe with your hardy band of brothers and a single well placed LMG gunner until the moment your quick-teched tanks blow through and hit the bastard where it hurts.

Sins is the slow paced awesome that has led my friend and I to start playing and only look up when we realize the birds are chirping and class is in three hours. Plus it has guns that shoot across solar systems to blow up planets.

They each provide a wonderfully realized take on the genre, and you should play them both until your eyes bleed.

Supreme Commander if you enjoyed Total Annihilation back in the day. Or even if you didn't, it's pretty awesome in terms of large scale strategy.

Company of Heroes for epic squad level strategy.

Sins of a Solar Empire for galactic conquest level strategy.

And a lot of the other stuff people here have already recommended. All I can say is demo's demo's demo's where possible.

Oh jeez yes. If you haven't played Escape Velocity at least twice, play it and soon.

It's like Mass Effect if Mass Effect was coded by two people.

It's a beautiful combination of arcadey shooting, addictive RPG elements, and fun adventure storytelling.

Don't worry, I'm making great progress now that the girlfriend is busy with school. I think I totalled up my eBay and Half.com expenditures and I was around 200 dollars, nothing major. Backlog is in the sig (though a lot of those were purchased and played years ago and are there because I plan to replay them).

They should put Grim Fandango on Steam, everyone should have a chance to play it.

If you do manage to come across it in a store, definitely nab it, unless you are particularly loathing of the adventure genre.
