Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!
I'm considering running a Tor relay. Bandwidth isn't an issue, I have FiOS and I'd only allocate a little bit. I'd run it on a spare computer that right now is only used for Folding.
What are the risks? Can something ever come back to bite me? Security issues at all? I'd like to think that I'm helping people out, with all the internet suppression around the world. I know it'll probably also be used by people to escape bans or whatnot, but that's not my goal.
Basically I just want to know if I'm actually going to help anyone, and if there's any risk to me.
Thanks, and kudos to you if you even know what Tor is D:
There was a case in Germany where a man was arrested for running a Tor relay which was used for illegal activity. I don't know if he was convicted, but he was certainly inconvenienced, I think they took his computer from him for forensics.

So those are your risks.
He was never charged, simply brought in for questioning. He was let go with the explanation that it had been a misunderstanding on the part of the police. Source. Germany has some pretty draconian IT laws to begin with, and the harassment of tor gateway hosters seems to be isolated to there and has only occurred twice.
I'd say you're fine to run a tor gateway in the US or Canada. No one has ever been sued for running a tor server according to the tor legal FAQ, which even goes so far as to give you the number of the staff attorney that you can call if you do manage to get in trouble for assistance locating a lawyer.
