Ah, screw it. These small, slow steps towards progress are boring. I'm going to go out on a low note in Washington -- an almost unprecedented low -- and then see how I fare in New Jersey.

I'm really going to make it count this time!!

I'm just at the beginning of the second movie. You can't have an iron fist!

Obo should really go see George Carlin live.

So i just watched What the Bleep Do We Know!? last night. Holy hell that was a trip of a film. Anyone else seen it?

I wanted to see it until I heard it was incredibly stupid. Like, I've heard it compared unfavorably with intelligent design.

It's got some interesting stuff in it about how the brain works, which i buy. And it's got some interesting stuff in it about thoughts effecting things outside of the body, which i don't know that I buy. Ultimately the point is that consciousness creates reality thru quantum mechanics by consciousness choosing which states (out of the possibilities) each "thing" will be.

So like i said, some stuff i buy, some stuff i don't, the "story telling" though was pretty fantastic and all in all a fun movie to watch.

Why is this. My only exposure to George Carlin was that, after my senior prom, I skipped out of receiving an award at the Teen Arts Festival to drive down to the Jersey shore in the back of a jeep with two Brazilian women. There was a boy there -- a friend of our host, the two had met via their piano instruction -- who had brought with him a book of George Carlin routines that we would routinely read from.

I would later get drunk, perform a rain dance to the sounds of thunder outside, and get in bed with that boy. Nothing happened, though, since I started screaming Rape! even though he wasn't even near me and he wanted to avoid a situation so he ran upstairs sobbing and slept on a couch.

So, that's what I know about George Carlin. He's the favorite of a sobbing homosexual whom I met at an afterprom party after downing like four shots of something brown and spicy.

That last bit simultaneously sounds like a dilution of the observer effect and a massive misinterpretation of physics.

You know how sometimes there are "silent letters" in words that don't make any sound? Is there a term to describe the opposite of that? Letters that are pronounced but not actually there?

Not a very good example, but "Thapa", pronounced as "Tharpa".

I've... I've never heard that. Ever. But it's not the same thing as I'm pretty sure the imaginary r in "Thapa" is supposed to be pronounced.

That sounds like a regional thing, or maybe a transliteration thing, rather than a rule of pronunciation.

There's a city down the street from where I live called Armuchee. It's a Native American name, but the poor white trash that lives there has slowly managed to alter the pronunciation to Armurchee, stressing the middle syllable, rather than putting the stress on the first syllable and gliding over the middle one with a sort of soft e sound.

Making strides to better one's situation also garners attention. More than that, it's a validating kind of attention instead of a sympathetic woe-is-me attention.

This is actually a person's name. But the reason for the pronounciation doesn't matter--is there a term for the r sound?

That's just people being dumb and lazy. The best way to fix that is stress the correct pronunciation when you say it. They probably don't have any idea how to correctly spell the word when they pronounce it like that, come to think of it.
