So I just returned from picking up The Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band with Choir: "This is Our Punk Rock",
and waiting for a good opportunity to listen to it. In the mean time, here's a thread about post rock music. I know there are more than a few Godspeed You! Black Emperor fans here, so I figure this thread might go somewhere. Also, the genre is a loose one, so don't worry about "fitting in".
Ok, so here's a list of some of the bands that have been mentioned.
Mogwai
Sigur Ros
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Explosions in the Sky
A Silver Mt. Zion
Mono
This Heat
Bark Psychosis
Talk Talk
The one track I heard off of that record did absolutely nothing for me. In fact, it kind of grated on me.
But I greatly enjoy Godspeed. I went on a binge just the other day of listening to Slow Riot on loop for a few hours.
Was it the one with the choir? So Some Lonesome Corner So Many Flowers Bloom is iffy for me, but the other stuff is sounding alright. Not finished though.

"Post-rock is a genre of alternative rock characterized by the use of musical instruments commonly associated with rock music, but utilizing rhythms, harmonies, melodies, timbre, and chord progressions that are not found in rock tradition. Simply put, it is the use of 'rock instrumentation' for non-rock purposes."

Straight out of wikipedia.

It was called blindblindblind, I think.
Different record, and I believe that was a live track you likely heard. There's one floating around on the interwebs, but I don't think they have a real studio version out yet.
The best live band in the world right now. Anyone who says different has not seen them live.
I really wanna see them. But they're working on a new album right now. Hopefully it'll come out by the end of the year and they'll tour starting in december or something.

Three very popular Post Rock bands, all of which are quite different. Explosions in the Sky are also pretty big, but their recordings are mediocre. Live though? Holy McShit Fuck good.
