but they really should've allowed proud files to skip it or something (on a second playthrough, for example)

I always thought that Gears of War trailer was really pretentious. Trying way too damn hard to be ironic.

A lot of the World in Conflict one too. I usually find pop music in games meant to have original scores to be really distracting, even in trailers.

The "artistic" part comes from the irony. Playing slow, sad sappy music over a scene of war to emphasize "Oh man it's exhilarating but when you think about it it's really really sad" is just really pretentious.

Nothing will ever be as grand or as effective in my mind as the original Metal Gear Solid. It's my favorite game. Everything about it was so cool and different at the time-- and it still is in a lot of ways. It taught me a lot about what videogames could be and storytelling in general. The rose colored glasses probably help.
