Will an old Cable Modem affect speed?

When I called to have my internet reset the cable company said my old was too old to use there Speed boost technology and I just wanted to know if there is any truth to that and how much of a difference a new modem would make. Also, what would be a good modem to buy?

    Errr, I have a nearly 10 year old Surfboard and I use Cox's Speed Boost technology just fine. As long as your cable modem is still DOCSIS 2.0 compliant, I call bull.
