What are good certs for a low level VS?

As someone who doesn't know much about the game, I would say I really liked the AT weapons, and MAX's. AT just felt powerful, while the MAX's let you live longer than 5 seconds :P

I downloaded the trial and everything went fine.
I logged in, created a character, was being sent to the first area and it crashed without warning.
edit: It crashes on the last loading block for VS Sanctuary, when it just says "VS Sanctuary" in the bottom right.

Assuming you are running Vista or XP, you will likely need to run Planetside in Windows 98 compatibility mode.

For Vista, make sure the following boxes are checked in the compatibility tab:
    - Disable visual themes
    - Disable desktop composition

I've also seen this one reccomended, but I leave it on with no ill effect:

    - Disable display scaling on high DPI settings

I play Hallee on Emerald with the Vanu, so give me a hollar if any of you see me online. I generally roll in armor (I actually don't have any real certs for playing Infantry).

I'm having a similar problem. I can log in as my character, but after about 10 seconds the game freezes and I have to force quit or restart my computer. I've tried updating my drivers, but I already have the most recent ones and I couldn't find a Windows 98 compatability thing :( , but I might be doing it wrong.

The Pulsar is very underrated (all the empire specific MA rifles are imo) and will actually let you harass light armor on the fly with it's secondary fire mode which I love. Being able to chase a Mossy away with an assault rifle makes me smile for some reason. Plus Medium Assault is only 2 certs and gives you the Punisher as well whichin addition to working as a decent rifle works as a poor mans grenade launcher which can be handy for stalemates on base assaults. Just watch your friendly fire.

UniMAX is another way to go but I'm not really a fan of the Vanu AA or AV MAXs.

You could also go cloaker support with Advanced Medic and Engineer but unless you're playing with a group of smart people that can be more frustration than it's worth. Cloaking also takes awhile to get the hang of and if you're spotted you'll often be dead before you can get a shot off.

Really though your best bet for the game as it stands form what I've seen is Reinforced Armor, Heavy Assault and Anti-vehicle. Bring your Lasher and a Decimator or two if you're indoors, and Lasher/Lancer or Pulsar/Lancer if you're outdoors. I've been play for a week and a half now and have run across 3 nights where it wasn't just broken squads fighting inside bases. Problem here is this takes a few levels before you'll have the certs to do it.

I've pretty much gone back to playing NC. Everytime I'm on VS there's one maybe two squads who are playing smart with the rest just mindlessly rushing into bases and getting killed. NC at least appears to have some organized outfits still playing who usually have a spot or two open.

Vanu AV MAXes are the best. If you are good enough, you can use the afterburn to kill tanks easily.

I can see that. I've never had much luck with AV MAXs vs tanks though. The times I tried the Comet I was going up against a Vanguard damn near every time.

    It never ended well.

You need to make a shortcut for Planetside, right click it and choose properties. There will be a compatibility tab, click that and the options will be there.

As for AV MAX vs tank, the trick is to use cover and surprise. Going toe to toe with a tank in a AV MAX (or any kind of MAX for that matter) is really stupid if the gunner is worth a damn. Use walls, corners and what not that you can duck behind and whittle them away, if you just stand there shooting at them, you will die.

I'm happy to play whatever faction, as long as it's with other people (preferably PAers) in a semi-organized fashion. Should I fire up a NC character?

It's pretty much where you'll find me and I've been playing almost every night. On the other hand there's only like 5 days left in the free period and I'm not sure I'll be subscribing after it expires.

Actually maybe for one month to see how the merge goes as far as population. A big part of the population problem I'm encountering is that I play from about 12:30am central to whenever the lack of people playing makes it pointless.

Just an FYI, the game appears to be free even after the server merge. Also, lots more battles going on now.

Yeah, I noticed that myself (I went out and bought 2 station cards anticipating having to pay).

This might be fixed after the downtime tonight though.

Either way, I had a lot of fun tonight and it wasn't two squads vs two squads for once which was a blast.

On another note I have two "main" characters. One is full on grunt, the other is Adv Med/engy (support)and expert hacking and a cloaker. Holy shit do you have to think and play differently.

I miss being in an Outfit that could field a 7 person plu squad every night. Playing a BR25 is pretty pointless unless you can lead a squad.

I mean, yay, 30k BEP. Except none of that does anything for me :P

Hey guys, I've been looking for a good game to play with buddies at work that will run on our (decent) work laptops. This game rocked the house when I played beta back in the day, but I thought they kind of ruined it when they locked down bases so you could only capture adjacent ones. It forced the battle to a few spots on a continent and it became a giant zerg, eliminating the effectiveness of small squad combat.
I was wondering what its like these days:
Are you still forced to fight on a designated front (no ninja-ing their bases with a mosquito/hacker guy)
Is the population so low now that it doesnt matter to have forced fronts, I'll just be happy to find someone to shoot at?
    Any PA'ers still active?

I'm probably going to download the trial over the weekend and take a peek around.

Brink: Awesome so far on PC
EvE: 0.0 killed the game for me :(
