    Probably anything? Bass can get very expensive, but if you're learning, anything cheap will do. Most music stores carry a bass/amp pack marketed for beginners (Fender has one under their brand name Squire, Ibanez probably has one as well) which is fine when you're starting out but you'll want to upgrade your amp quickly; a shit bass sounds good on a sweet amp, but a sweet bass sounds like shit on a shit amp.

    I'd say go cheap and build you way up because a lot of people give up playing instruments early on and I don't want you to waste your money. You might want to talk to Inquisitor when he comes on also because he plays bass.

    What James said is pretty much spot on.

    I did a ton of reading of bass forums and stuff before I purchased my first bass, and it all really came down to personal preference and brand/country loyalty. Just find something that feels right in your hands, check for dead spots and all that.

    This is my cheap entry level Bass.

    I really have no other bass to compare it to but, i mean..it's worked fine so far.

    Plus this bass looks a lot nicer than most beginner basses I've seen. Kind of odd that it has both a precision and jazz pickup though :P

    It is a little odd, but you can have adjust the volume individually for each pick-up, so it can act as though it only has one or the other.

    I just think it would be fun to play bass, although I wish I had someone close by who played guitar so I could jam with them when I do learn bass.

    Oh god was it horrible.

    However, seeing Cage punch a large woman in the face, karate kick another woman in the chest, and run around in a bear-suit, it was totally worth it.

    Note: The original Wickerman is much better and creepy as hell.
