Films statistics

I am trying to locate any sort of statistics that show how many films came out in any given year (preferably sometime within past few years) that show how many films had females in their leading roles. I have scoured the typical databases (JSTOR, etc.) and Google, but I am not coming up with anything.

I think it is ridiculous; as I am sure there is someone out there who has the official tally on such a thing. Alas, I can't find it. Could anyone point me in the right direction?

    This post might help - it links to a site that keeps just a ton of movie-related data - but from the sound of things, the only way to get the specific stats you want is to compile them yourself, wading through the lists of movies released in the past couple of years.
