Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!

I do not think that I could eat a sandwich that held me in high regard.

We're both psychopaths so we preyed on some innocent children together! Ah, good times...

In other news, stage 1 of project "write about astronauts" is complete. Stage 2 will follow, which comprises of heavy editing and strong german liquors, applied simultaneously and liberally.

One of my lecturers pointed out something really cool to me today. See, I told her that I wanted to be a writer first, and that design was a secondary "ideal career", and she says... why not be a design writer?

Seems that most design writers are AWFUL, to the point where IDW magazine had to hire a writer from a FISHING MAGAZINE to be its primary interview guy. There is a market here I never considered.

Three chat threads. Three distinct subforum communities. Hang on a sec. Do you hear that? I think I heard thunder. In my head. Now I'm crying near freezing tears.

    It's a BRAIN STORM!

Suddenly I have all these ideas. One is coalescing. It's almost something real, hang on, wait for it, this stings like hell, but, but here it is!

Our chat thread has a shitty name. We should force a coup and change it.

    Now I need a drink.

    Too Drunk to [Chat]

I have some sort of horrible mental block when it comes to naming characters in stories. Heck, even when I have to name some character in a video game it can take me forever. I'm just gonna end up naming everyone numbers so I can get on with the story.

If I'm writing something that calls for "ordinary" names of the "American" variety, I'll often browse the lists of names from the Census Bureau:

    http://www.census.gov/genealogy/names/names_files.html

There's enough variety in the US to come up with various ethnic-sounding names as well. Or, if you're trying to be funny, you can try some unlikely juxtapositions, like Florentino Smith.

Sometimes, I'll be looking at one of the lists, and one first or last name will instantly inspire a good last or first name to go with it. For example, for one of the characters in a script I've been working on, I saw the name Cassandra, which was the kind of name I was looking for, and for whatever reason, the last name "Fiorella" came into my mind. I don't even know if it's a "real" last name, it just sounded right. So, "Cassandra Fiorella" it is.

You should wonder what he knows that you don't.

Also, how the hell do you people write flawed yet sympathetic characters in short stories? I can't seem to find a balance. I either get saints or assholes.

  • Uncle LongUncle Long Registered User
Practice? Read a lot? I don't have any tricks for you on this one.

  • Grid SystemGrid System Registered User
    You call that a brainstorm?

    Ah well, practice it is.

  • tastydonutstastydonuts Registered User regular
Reading up on it, or just find a flawed yet sympathetic person irl and observe them carefully, then covertly model your character after their mannerisms.

Btw: I hate work on Fridays. Wednesday is hump day but this Friday is LOL BRICK WALL ON THE WAY TO WEEKEND day for me. >|

Every once in awhile, I get down on myself for writing genre stuff. I love speculative fiction, but it's so easy to just wind up rewriting tired cliches. Then I think about Michael Moorcock. Literature and pulp are not exclusive--you really can do both. That usually makes me feel better.

Anyways, Scalzi had a post today about the YA market. Anyone write in that? It is huge and booming. After thinking about my "ideal reader," I realized that I could probably work in that market. (My ideal reader is the 15 year old version of me, usually.)
