Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!
The developer behind the game is BottleRocket, who in various incarnations were responsible for the Sony PS2 hits Mark of Kri and Rise of the Kasai. Both of those games were attractive (they basically looked like a Disney film in terms of character design and animation) and -- belying the smooth graphics -- surprisingly violent. This made BottleRocket a solid choice to develop the revival of Namco Bandai's hyper-violent action series, which will arrive on both PS3 and Xbox 360 sometime around mid-2009. You can look at the in-game model of Rick above to get an idea of what the actual game looks like, but check out the June issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly for the full, no-holds barred reveal.
I regret that there is no mention of a Chainsaw.
I mean come on this game is begging for it.
Weapons and monsters from the original series make a return
Honestly I didn't play the old Splatterhouse games, a mistake I hope to rectify, but if there's a chainsaw in the old games chances are it's in here, too.

The game is developed by BottleRocket Entertainment, a developer formed from the core staff that created The Mark of Kri and The Rise of the Kasai for Sony back on the PlayStation 2. Comic writer Gordon Rennie is in charge of the script, which doesn't do a whole lot of messing with the formula: You're still college student Rick, you still have a crazy supernatural mask, and you and the mask still have to rescue your girlfriend.
Splatterhouse, says Namco Bandai, will ditch the traditional "life bar" for a more, shall we say, organic method: As he takes damage, Rick will lose body parts and chunks of flesh. You'll have to regenerate them to stay alive.
Looks like the over-the-top goriness will return. Check this ickiness out:
My low point came while I was crushing man's skull like sparrow's egg between my thighs. But then I thought to myself, "who else would crush man's skull like sparrow's egg between his thighs?"

the splatterhouse guy looks retarded this time around, and the graphics look lame in the bit of in game footage there, and violence as a gimmick is all kinds of played out these days. so i dunno.
ALL I WANTED WAS A PEPSI
AND SHE WOULDN'T GIVE IT TO ME
I remember buying Splatterhouse II (at least I think it was II) for the Genesis at a Trade-a-Game place when I was like, 10 years old. I had to hide it from my parents but ULTRA-VIOLENCE FTW
Supposedly the HOLY CRAP VIOLENCE hook in this game isn't that you rip baddies into bloody chunks (though you do) but that the baddies rip you into bloody chunks. The more damage you take, the more you look like you've been chomped on by piranhas.

That's pretty much my beef with it so far. He's just too ape-like in his appearance and movements, and that kind of kills it for me. I liked the old "buffed-up escaped mental patient" thing the original had, plus he was utilizing all kinds of weapons from garden shears to shotguns. Here, it just looks like you're beating things into a pulp and ripping off their limbs to beat them further. Not really a need for the weapons, at least from what I've seen.
Eh. Just looks too "XTREEM!" for my tastes, and frankly, they're about 10 years too late on that boat.

I uploaded a picture from 1up on there. He looks a lot different, for better or for worse.
Growing his arm back.
Interesting how you can lose and grow back limbs and what not.

Back in the day, a difficult and violent beat-em-up was instant gold. So what, I say!
No, you're wrong.
It was a tough, action/horror with a Lovecraftian theme.
So awesome.
