Recommend some top-notch PC games

edited May 2008 in Help / Advice Forum
I've been a console player for pretty much all my life, but I just got a relatively fast computer the other day.

Can you guys recommend any good games for the PC? (I would prefer that they were a year or so old, because I doubt my computer can handle the newer games well).

I enjoy RTS games immensely, as well as first and third person shooters. I also enjoy RPGs, but I don't like the Japanese ones. (I'm also not a fan of MMOs).

Thanks.

P.S. Some games that I already own or have a demo for are: Age of Empires II and III, Company of Heroes, Supreme Commander, Rome: Total War, and Europa: Universalis III.

    RTS -
Command and Conquer series (newest is C&C3 - Tiberium Wars, but the older ones are excellent and can be had on the cheap)
    Act of War
    Dawn of War
Evil Genius (not a typical RTS, but fun)
    Sim City 4
    World in Conflict

    FPS -
Call of Duty series, especially CoD 4 - Modern Warfare
Half Life 2 & expansions, Portal, etc (All available on Steam)
    Prey
Bioshock (if you didn't play it on the console)
    Fear

    Third person -
Splinter Cell series (if you didn't play it on the console)
Hitman Blood Money (and/or the other Hitman games)

Those are the ones that immediately come to mind. If you don't mind going to older games, there are a lot of good ones to be had for free/cheap.

I'd recommend Orange Box for a lot of games bundled together.

To sate your non-Japanese RPG-lust, I have to suggest Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate 2, Planescape: Torment, and Knights of the Old Republic.

Those are the ones that immediately come to mind. If you don't mind going to older games, there are a lot of good ones to be had for free/cheap.

Just to add to this, the pre-C&C3 games can be found in a bundle called "Command and Conquer: The First Decade". It includes C&C1, C&C2, Red Alert 1, Red Alert 2, and (if I remember correctly) all of the expansions. I think it also included Generals and Zero Hour (people are kind of split about how good they are though).

I'd also suggest looking up Warcraft 3 and Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne for RTS. If you can find it, grab the battlebox.

Also, if you have a place nearby that sells older (and I do mean older) games, see if you can find Total Annihilation (its the spiritual ancestor of Supreme Commander) and its expansions.

EDIT: Beat'd by a mile on the First Decade bit.

    Screw you :D

As for RTS games go, the holy trinity right now is Supreme Commander (giant battles), World in Conflict (great coop play and fast paced tactics), and Company of Heroes (perfect in every way). So get at least one of those if you want some RTS loving. C&C 3 comes in a close fourth if you like that stuff. I dunno if you have the demo or actual game for SC and CoH but I would definitely recommend at least the latter.

The list has undergone very minor renovations though so uh, yeah (there, uh, may be some repeats from your post...):
