Processes Refuse to Die

So I just reformatted my laptop. Windows XP. Starting today, Ventrilo and Firefox have each crashed a couple times. When I try to kill the process, nothing happens. It pops up the "Would you like to inform microsoft of what happend" window and neither answer causes the program to close. Trying to close it via the application pane doesn't work either. When I try to restart, it hangs up at trying to close the program, and I have to reboot manually.

Any ideas?
