I've been running around as a Guardian on normal. Holy shit they're pretty much unkillable. I got close once when I was stunned, shocked and phased. I need more consumables =(
Apparently the new changes and skills for Guards are hax as fuck. I want shield throw so I can be like Captian America.
So is this game fun? I have heard only negative things about it
but how is it now? Did they polish it?
The core game mechanics haven't changed much, but the attention to detail, performance, quality of play and amount of content have all increased significantly. Skills are meaningful, subscription has become worth it to many people. If it had launched like this, I'm sure it would have been a pretty good success. As it is, at $20USD it is attracting a fair few open minded people and there are constantly topics in the forums about former players coming back, some of them even subscribing.

It's fun if you can look past the fact that every area looks pretty much exactly the same. It doesn't bother me much, so yes, I am having a great time with it. The combat is what I wish Diablo 3's could be. I love the real-time third-person combat.
It's a lot more enjoyable than it was at release. Of course, now I also actually have a buddy to level up with as well as four gigs of RAM. One gig = crappy loading times, and it had a negative effect on my framerate too.
I'm really considering picking Hellgate up tommorow (inspired by the Diablo 3 announcement). Would you guys recomend this over the Diablo 2 Battle Chest (It was my favorite game through 7-8th grade, so its familiar territory) or Titan Quest? For the record, I actually enjoyed the Hellgate demo, which most people say was a horribly gimped (even by demo standards) version of the final product.
Those are three good choices. Diablo 2 is familiar, like you say. If you want something new, they're both spiritual successors. Hellgate's a little newer, and it preserves the demonic/hellish atmosphere of Diablo, but it controls and plays a bit differently. Titan Quest is basically 3d Diablo 2 in classic mythology, with a new class system for flair.

If your choices are Hellgate, Titan Quest, or the Diablo BC, I'd give an emphatic reccommendation to Titan Quest. TQ is fucking amazing. Do your best to find the Gold edition, because it comes with the expansion. Or, hell, maybe get TQ and the Battle Chest, seeing as they're both fairly cheap and would probably add up to the price of a new game.
I thought this game was supposed to be really good, but now I hear that it is pretty bad. Should I even bother playing this game?
For $20, I can wholeheartedly support buying it and playing it.
Even at release, with all the bugs and balance issues, I had a blast playing it for about a month. Now it's much more polished, cheaper, and actually has some content worth subscribing for.

Ayup the game is pretty worthwhile now and at $20 it is a steal.
I had my first real, major Hellgate disappointment yesterday. The "Ride the Lightning" quest.
Oh boy, giant dual-minigun-wielding death machine! My Guardian gets to be a robotic super-marksman for the duration of this little street-gauntlet! Yaaaaa- oh god what the fuck it's this hamfisted pseudo-RTS horseshit NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Multishot is pretty invaluable considering how far you've gone down that line already. Personally I don't see the need for Shock and Awe in most situations, even counting its synergy.
On the flip side, if you're going to use strikes a lot I'd probably recommend investing more in your elemental and multibeacon, possibly dropping points from beacon itself, and of course the crit line.
The build probably lends itself to an ignite gun with splash of some sort to maximise AoE and elemental benefits.
Something like this could be fun for a bit, but I dunno how long I'd think it was fun to just run around with the mouse button held down and press Multishot/Beacon every now and then.
I'm digging Strikes as well, using an Engineer. I'm going droneless, relying on Strikes and suicide bots, and having a blast.
I've read that if you throw a strike while Multishot is active, you'll actually throw three (same with grenades), which sounds absolutely horrifying and wonderful. I haven't tried it, though, so don't blame me if it doesn't work.

e: wait... it doesn't? Why'd it ask for it? Bah, oh well.

Yup, and I believe the live servers will be 20 to unlock after 2.0.

20 bucks on Steam.
edit: also, how's this for marksman? I discovered that I like the strikes.
