Lots of good suggestions so far. I'm especially fond of Bone and Leave It to Chance.
Books that I didn't see mentioned yet:
Archie comics
Mark Crilley's Akiko
Jimmy Gownley's Amelia Rules!
Ted Naifeh's Courtney Crumrin and the _____ (assorted titles)
Mike Kunkel's Herobear and the Kid (except it's an incomplete series with an uncertain future, but what's there is still marvelous)
Doug TenAppel's Tommysaurus Rex
Linda Medley's Castle Waiting
Phil and Kaja Foglio's Girl Genius
Abe Lincoln, mysteriously appearing in modern times, has to stop a less-historically-accurate version of himself from accomplishing his nefarious schemes, with the help of a couple plucky history-loving students.
I hear DC's revamping of their kids line is quite successful. I would look into Tiny Titans, Shazam and the Monster Society, Super Friends and their future books.

what is this monstrosity
I have no idea, but I'd get it just for the fun of that parent/teacher meeting with her history teacher a few years down the line.
