Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!
All this Diablo 3 info makes me want to play D2 again. But a) I played that out to the point where I never want to see another fetish again, and b) my PC is sort of busted atm and cannot run anything more demanding than a web browser, and I don't currently feel like shelling out for a new gpu.
I've been doing most of my gaming on my DS, which seems like it could be an ok platform for a game like D2. Basically, I want to beat on monsters, get loot, and then use it to beat on more monsters. Random generated dungeons, multiple difficulty levels, and bosses I can hit until candy comes out are probably necessary. Crafting and stylus control would be big plusses.
G&T is so far 100% on DS recommendations for me (Prof Layton, Shiren, TWEWY, Rocket Slime) so if a good game like this exists, I'm sure PA'ers could point me to it. Thanks!
i highly recommend Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates. I just bought it, and i'm going to be working my way through the single player, before doing the multiplayer dungeons (most likely single player as well, but i think they are different dungeons). As far as i know there are no random dungeons, but it has the loot thing going, you collect/buy loot and it shows on your character, and makes you stronger. the aesthetic is kind of kiddy, so you might check out some videos first, but i'm having a lot of fun so far.
You might want to give Orcs and Elves a try. Technically its a Rougelike but it has everything you are looking for (aside from maybe random dungeons, I'm not sure if it has that or not)

Eh... I don't really think you're going to find what your looking for. Contact is the closest with Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates being next in line, but I wouldn't outright buy either one thinking they're too much like Diablo. I'd rent both of those first, like through GameFly or something if you have it.

Now I'm wondering why the hell Diablo hasn't been ported to the DS or PSP yet, hell Blizzard was even considering porting Starcraft to the DS a while back.
As mentioned earlier, Two Towers and Return of the King for GBA are pretty decent hack-and-slashes. Weapons have prefix/suffix modifiers, and characters can go through multiple playthroughs. Unfortunately, multiplayer requires GBAs

this is the closest to diablo 2 that I've found on portables. on consoles it would be baldur's gate: dark alliance.
I am a huge diablo 2 fan so I looked for that experience. shining soul came close as well.
This is an eternal quest for me aswell, I feel that the lack of Diablo a-like on the DS is a crime (along with Syndicate and Jagged Alliance but I digress)
The closest I found in a portable was Dungoen Siege on the PSP, which was not half bad in terms of good loot that displays on the char etc...
I tried:
Contact (not even close)
Children of Mana (far too boring and GBA levels of tech)
Shiren (awesome but just not there)
Dungeon Explorer (crap)
I just can't seem to find a moody, atmospheric title on the DS that has those gameplay factors, they are all either far too cutsey (and yes that does affect the atmosphere for me) or are limited on the gameplay options and loot. It suprises me that WoW and Diablo are 2 maissvley succesfull games / concepts and are almost entirley based on finding cool loot and using it yet so many games miss out on that.
Along these same lines... is there anything close for the PSP? I've been jonesing for a D2-like experience on either the PSP or DS. Sid Meier's Pirates! is currently holding my hunger at bay, because it's somewhat randomized and can play differently each time.... but I need something else. Something closer.

Dungeon Siege
I really rather liked it, looks good, nice loot with greens, oranges etc... Boss farming, atmosphere, varied builds (mele mage, bow warrior etc...)
Thanks for the suggestions. I think it's between Summon Night and Ring of Fates. By the time D3 comes out, I'll probably have fixed my laptop and played some more D2 on it, but one of these should stave that off for a while.
I'd just prefer not to take a step back to GBA tech now, although if I see a used Shining Soul in gamestop for cheap, I'll probably pick it up.
It appears I've been sorely beaten, I also came here to suggest Shining Soul 2. It has a limited amount of dungeons, but you can play as a cute little ninja. I think it evens out.

I hear Shiren is much, much better, but I think they're pretty similar.

Also, I think Shiren the Wanderer is close enough to apply.

if so you might try that
Just got it myself the other day.
Alternately, you could wait for Gauntlet DS, which is somewhere on the horizon.
