Hi! first, I know I fail at being a girlfriend because I have less than a week before his birthday (it's next monday) and still don't know what to do. Mainly because I want to give him something really cool, and just giving him a game would be boring. So a little bit of description
He is turning 23, he likes fantasy book and sci-fi (if it looks awful, he'll decide he NEEDS to read it and will probably love it. for strange reason like "but its pirate! in space! there is a goblin on the cover! look!) I think is favorite author is George R.R. Martin, but he also talks about Elizabeth Moon, Anne McAfree. I introduced him to Terry Pratchett and he really liked it. He likes playing magic and all kind of card game I don't understand. he is kinda obsessed with everything about WWI and WWII. He also likes zombie and gory things, and love making plans with his brother for when there is an apocalypse (think survival plan) oh and porn. it's kinda like a hobby for him
I was thinking of giving him something like "the Zombie survival guide" or something like that if I don't find something better

Not that books 4+ are bad, but stack 'em all up and it's kind of intimidating. Best to start small.
Edit: Erikson is like George R. R. Martin but he actually writes books for a living.

He's actually done a couple. There's another series he has that is WW2 in a fantasy setting (dragons instead of fighters/bombers, leviathans instead of subs, etc). I believe the first book is called "Into the Darkness"
Well. is that zombie stripper movie out yet?? and I don't think there's zombie porn. we watched a vampire hunter porn with ghouls in it once but that's pretty much it
I'll start looking into your suggestion and see what would be worthy of his birthday. so far I'm thinking of picking a couple of things for monday and pre-ordering that survival deck
oh and Harry Turtledove seems to fit in his interest, thanks I'll try to find more about it
Not sure as to how many of these suggestions you'll end up going with, but I wanted to second World War Z as being excellent and the audiobook is also great.
It's abridged, but it's read by a full cast and there are some pretty well known (in nerdier circles, I guess) actors/actresses doing voices. Mark Hamill, Alan Alda, Henry Rollins, et al.

You could pick up a copy of Dead Rising for the 360 on the cheap if he doesn't have it - pretty good zombie game.

Great book. Never saw the movie. The book is written more like a documentary/story than a novel. I absolutely loved it. There's a few more by the same author. The author is actually the son of one of the Iwo Jima flag raisers (that famous picture on the cover).

Also look into the house on haunted hill game. It is very similar and awesome.

I second this suggestion. If he likes Zombies and hasn't read either of them (and he'd probably mention if he had), these would probably be very big hits.
Also, Fables is a lot of fun, as are Preacher and Y: The Last Man, if you think he'd be into any of them (maybe wikipedia the basic ideas and/or skim the first issue of each if there's a comic store nearby?)

As far as books, well... I think he'd enjoy some Joel Rosenberg, actually. The "Guardians of the Flame" series is one of my favorite ways to kill an afternoon. The only problem is the first few books are damn near impossible to find.
I'd also suggest some David Eddings- no matter whatever I read, I try to make a point to read one of his books every few weeks. Ignore his new stuff and pick up a set of the Belgariad and the Mallorean. Sure, it's ten books, but it's good quality literature.
For cards, you might just go to his local card shop and buy him a booster box of the newest set. It'll run you about $120, though.
Try the World at War series, by Harry Turtledove. First book is Into the Darkness.
It is, essentially, WWII with dragons.

- Throw in the zombie survival quide
- A sci-fi book he'll enjoy to pass the time
- Spam and peanut butter or the like
- A little card game like Zombies (both for defense training and entertainment)
- A porn mag (hey a guy has needs and the wimmen might be dead!)

(But I have to say, World War Z was the best book I read last year, so I'd throw my hat behind that recommendation, too.)
