Laptop stalls unless I smack it
My father-in-law got a new laptop for work so we inherited his current/old one. Its an HP running Windows XP, I don't have the specific model number handy. It worked great for a month or two but now its freezing up.
Picture your hands in normal typing position. Where your left palm-heel would be, just to the left of the touchpad. I need to press down VERY hard on that location. When I do it works ok, mouse pointer moves, etc. When I don't I still have screen, but its like it caches all my inputs, ie, if I hit the windows button the start menu doesn't pop up until I press on that part of the case again. This will even occur now during bootup sometimes, the progress bars on the Windows XP load will stop scrolling left to right unless you push on the stop.
I haven't opened the case, but directly under the stop on the bottom of the laptop is the access for the RAM. I've tried opening that and reseating the RAM to no avail. Any suggestions as to what this could be?
