you know why they had to call it "The Real Ghostbusters"?

Because a better cartoon was on at the same time.

When I was little I had a plastic proton pack I would wear on my back and run around with. It was the shit.

So does anyone remember the episode about the end of the world? Started off in a subway tunnel with a glow and a voice? The day the world ends was written on the door down there, not to be opened until armageddon? That was a fucking fantastic episode.

    I do remember that one!

I used to have a VHS tape of the episode where all the subway rails became haunted and the trains turned into big, maggot-like monsters that would scream around the tunnels and terrify the commuters.
I haven't been able to find that episode since.
The first paycheck I get from the new job might actually go towards this box set instead of going to pay off my credit card.

I saw Ghostbusters 2 in theaters. The first few times I saw it (being 5 or 6 at the time) I thought the kids saying "I thought it was gonna be He-Man" at the birthday party meant that He-Man also existed in the Ghostbusters universe.

Yes, I was a 6-year-old who was concerned about canon.

Keep in mind there was a He-Man live-action movie at the time.

Extreme Ghostbusters, as long as you ignore the lame title and the BK Kids crew are now ghostbusters, was a good show.

I have the DVDs they released about a year back, just 12 random episodes. I watched them and they were still great. I actually let one of my friends borrow them to let his 6 year old watch and he also loved them and wanted to watch more of them.

I tried to watch Deadwood, but it was trying too hard to be edgy. I wasn't fond of it.

REAL Ghostbusters was one of my Saturday morning mainstays.

It's not that there's a lot of swearing, it's that they put in strong language even when it's out of place. Even beyond that, it just had that whole "eXtreeem" vibe to it.

There's a good reason for it though
    Wikipedia wrote:
As [Creator David] Milch has explained in several interviews and on the DVD commentary tracks, originally the characters were to use period slang and swear words. Such words, however, were based heavily on the era's deep religious roots and tended to be more blasphemous than scatological. Instead of being shockingly crude (in keeping with the tone of a frontier mining camp), the results sounded downright comical. As one commentator puts it "… if you put words like "goldarn" into the mouths of the characters on "Deadwood," they'd all wind up sounding like Yosemite Sam." Instead, it was decided the show would use current profanity in order for the words to have the same impact on modern audiences as the blasphemous ones did back in the 1870s.

The other intent in regards to the frequency of the swearing was to signal to the audience the lawlessness of the camp in much the same way that the original inhabitants used it to show they were very self-aware of the fact they were living outside the bounds of "civil society."

That's not a very good reason at all. There are plenty of ways to get the same effect without having somebody say "fuck" every seven seconds.

Sometimes that sort of writing works. In Deadwood, it's so out of place that it's just distracting.

Just to be clear, if I can scrounge the cash together by the pre-order 10% off date, I am going to buy this thing. Provided that they also ship to us Canadia folk.

Sometimes, these companies, they don't do that.

I actually really disagree with you on this point.

I am very curious what you think would've been a more apt solution to convey the lack of decorum and abundance of salty speech of that period's social outcasts and ruffians.

but regarding deadwood, dialog or not, if you can allow yourself to get into it you'll find some of the best character-driven writing ever

the first couple episodes take a little bit to get their hooks into you, but if you give it a chance, it is simply one of the best series I've ever watched
