Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!

The very important RULES THREAD

1 ) What is this place?
This is the Games and Technology section of the Penny Arcade forum community. This forum exists to let you discuss games (of all sorts) and technology (from trebuchets to HD-DVD) with fellow Penny Arcade fans.

2 ) What isn't this place?
This isn't the place to discuss things that are not Games or Technology. While we encourage people to have fun and relax, topics and posts should be kept in the proximity of on-topic. Threads that run off into the wilderness, be it with excessive silliness or flagrant off-topic discussion, will be ended. While it would take an awful lot of horrible posts, individuals who persist in off-topic behaviour will be removed from the forum. The question of a "Chat Thread" can be found near the bottom of this post.

3 ) What do I need to know?
Aside from the general on-topic nature of this forum, there are some things to need to know are expected of your behaviour. Failure to adhere to these issues will result in an unpleasant confrontation with our staff.
The Critical Essentials to G&T Survival

[*]We encourage the use of something approximating the English language on this forum. While we don't want people quibbling over every minor misspelling or grammatical mistake, making a huge post without any capital letters or punctuation will not go over well.

[*]Don't be an idiot. Any attempt to wilfully circumvent anything in this rule list is considered idiocy. Idiocy - either genetic or willfull - is bannable.

[*]This forum is actually a dictatorship, not a democracy, and martial law, much like happy hour, never stops.

1 ) No discussion or linking to warez.
This includes abandonware and leaked software. We have a zero tolerance policy on the discussion of bootleg games and ROMS. Discussing them means you will be banned. At the request of Gabe there will be ZERO discussion of emulators or ROMs at all except for commercial sites backed by the game publishers. This rule comes from above and is not subject to debate.
2 ) Piracy and emulation :
These may still be discussed as news issues, but any passing mention to methods, techniques or resources is strictly not allowed. Any violation of the above rule is grounds for immediate banning. Just don't do it.
3 ) One topic per thread, one thread per topic.
Try to keep the discussion in each thread at least tangentially related to the topic; while discussions will naturally drift from subject to subject, intentionally hijacking a thread will not be tolerated. Also, keep topics simple. "GAMECUBE!" is not a topic, "Good RPGs for GameCube is". The only "collection" threads that are allowed is the discussion of upcomming consoles. After the initial release buzz has passed, please separate the discussion as appropriate. (Note that Xbox Live and Nintendo WiFi are appropriate topics, Xbox and Nintendo DS are not)
4 ) No site whoring, even "personal" sites.
Do not create topics to discuss your website - be it a game news site, or your goods for sale on eBay. Exceptions to this can be obtained by approaching one of our staff when necessary. They are rarely necessary as we have no interest in converting our user base into a marketing audience.
5 ) Do not make threads on hentai games.
Because we are just better off without them.
6 ) Do not make posts or threads about a moderator or a moderator decision.
Contact the mod(s) directly. This includes making a thread/post asking why your thread was locked, or asking why you were jailed.
7 ) Do not make threads with questions or suggestions regarding the boards.
They belong in The Monkey Den.
8 ) Do not make threads that consist only of links.
If you make a thread in G&T, it should contain some discussion of the material you're linking to, and not just "Hey people look at this."
9 ) Do not make threads about topics which have their own hot topic forum.

10 ) Do not make poll threads.
We don't like threads along the line of "What's your favorite console/video game/food?". Don't make them. We value actual discussion and not just posting a list of stuff you like.

1 ) Search before you post.
There are many frequently discussed topics that have been run into the ground, and creating a new topic for which we have a 40-page discussion on page 2 will not win you many friends. If you are new to the forums, lurk for awhile before you start posting so that you can learn what people are tired of reading about.
2 ) Label all spoilers.
Always include a spoiler notice in the subject of your thread where appropriate. If you include a spoiler in a post, use the
    {spoiler} text goes here {/spoiler} ( { = [ )
tag, which will format your text like this:

3 ) No forum raids.
We will absolutely not tolerate the use of this forum to organize attacks on other boards, just as we do not tolerate the use of other boards to organize attacks against this one.
4 ) Don't come back during a temp-ban.
If you are banned, stay off the forums until the ban expires, or the ban will become permanent. If you think your ban should have expired, contact the mod who banned you (check the Announcing who was banned thread).
5 ) Do not post pornographic or "shock" images.
You know the ones. Do not post images that make jokes about shock images either. Any racy or "borderline" image should be linked to rather than posted inline with a NSFW note beside it describing the content. Every post on this site should be something that, at a glance, does not look objectionable.
6 ) Images must be 400KB or smaller in size, 800 pixels or shorter in width.
This includes animated GIFs. If you need to share a larger picture, link to it.
7) The Glorious Edict
All insults except "silly goose" are banned without exception. Moderators are exempt.

The recommended maximum size for sigs is 500x80 pixels (four lines of text) total, and most sig images should be kept below 50KB. While we understand that your particular design may require slightly different dimensions or more bytes, please try and remain near these limits. Avatar images on the forums are 64x64 pixels, and the recommended maximum size for avatars is 20KB. Violations of the avatar size rule are usually caused by people using images or animations with huge dimensions as their avatars; if you just scale the work down to 64x64, the size that it will be displayed at anyways, even complex animations will be brought down to a reasonable size.

The absolute maximum combined filesize for your sig and avatar is 70KB. For example, it's perfectly acceptable to have a 65KB avatar and a text-only sig.

We're going to build some internal consensus before we reword rule 8, but with the formal disillution of Linksville on the horizon, G&T related link threads are allowed.

But you are NOT allowed to just post a link. If you can't be bothered to make an effort at commentary or response don't bother making a thread.

    Thread Assassination

Posts made with the intent to derail or destroy threads are unacceptable.

There is no such thing as "a bad thread that deserves to be derailed". If you don't like a thread, don't post in it. If you feel that a thread is such an egregious affront to the nature of G&T that it must be locked, PM a mod.

    Stillborn Threads
Don't post in them. These are dead on arrival, you know the kind; duplicates, blatant site-whoring, spam threads, terrible topics, ect. Use the 'Report This Post' button, or PM a mod to get it locked. If no mods are around but no one posts in the thread it will die on its own and you won't have to suffer the affront of looking at it. That is what we call a win-win right there, baby.

    Thread Length
Once a thread reaches 100 pages it will be locked by a mod. Feel free to have someone create a new thread around page 100 and PM a mod to have the old one locked. This makes threads less intimidating and easier to search.

Monoxide Edit: We're doing this at 100 pages now, not 50.

Megathreads and the Ending of Them

As explained long ago, megathreads will no longer be allowed, and users are instead invited to create topic specific threads as topics become, well, topical. Megathreads are welcome pre-launch of a new console, but that bridge is crossed for some time.

The existing PS3 and Wii Megathreads will be shut down on January 1, 2007, to allow users to frolic about their favoured new console through the holiday season.

    FreeX.com/Referral threads

The ban on FreeX.com (such as freeipods or freeflatscreens) discussion continues until forever. Don't make threads about them, or don't talk about them. Other referral sites such as are under the same umbrella. If you want to discuss games or technology, this is the place. If you want to recruit people to join a pyramid scheme, try somewhere else.

If you absolutely must try to get people to click your referral link, put it in your sig, no where else.

A lot of people don't see abandonware in the same light as pirate software. They seem them as relics of a halcyon age, lost to the ravages of time. But then some people just SAY that because along with all the other stuff they pirate they enjoy classic games.

But we get that there is a difference.

Abandonware Threads are Allowed but Must (100% of the time) get Mod Preapproval

I will tempban you myself if you think that preapproval is optional.

    Abusing the PM System

In the past we've had clever individuals trying to skirt the rules by using the PM system to talk about things they otherwise wouldn't be able to on this forum. While PMs aren't monitored, you shouldn't be Posting Messages asking people to PM you links to things that are against the rules.

This includes asking the Prime Minister, the Parked Mercedes, and whatever other stupid acronyms for P.M. you can come up with. Oh, and asking outright isn't cool either.

I'd like to remind you that nowhere in this thread does it say "Contact a Moderator for permission to make a Let's Play thread!"

Do you want to make one? If so, ask yourself, can I make it actually funny? Evidence submitted to this forum strongly suggests that no, you can't.

But if you want to brave the odds, take the bull by the horns, and drive forward into the garden of madness, be my guest.

If you spam threads by simply posting "blue dot" or variants, you will get an infraction. I don't know how much clearer about this we can be.

I would like to reiterate the rule above and point out that it's not a joke and people ARE getting infracted for it. Stop doing it. It's stupid and it serves no purpose, as you can subscribe to the thread without posting, or better yet post something with some content.

Oh and while we're at it, people who do the whole "I can't talk about torrents here but maybe the Prime Minister" could help you out are likely to not only get infractions but also have their use of the PM function removed purely for insulting our intelligence in such an obnoxious way, even in the cases (and it happens) where what they're talking about isn't even against the rules.

I'm not sure where this rule went to, but it's still a rule:

You cannot use the Penny Arcade Forums to help you do your homework. If you think you've got some kind of super-awesome survey or thesis that's so cool it would enrich all of our lives if you were allowed to share it with us, you can ask a mod for permission to do so. But don't hold your breath.

Due to consistently poor behaviour in the Team Fortress 2 threads, all infractions given in that thread will be serious infractions.

It should go without saying, but disputing the status of the Hitman game that is not the original and precedes Hitman: Contracts as the worst game ever created is a jailable offence.

While the possibility of more grave punishment is under discussion, I am willing to bring in a temporary policy that people who bring up tvtropes in an obnoxious fashion may be openly mocked. Crimes that come under this heading include: gratuitous Use Of Caps to indicate that you are Referencing A Trope, linking to tvtropes for no discernable reason, or being that guy who has read too much of said website and now feels the need to lecture everyone on the use of tropes in popular media as though a few wasted afternoons on a wiki has resulted in his being declared the pope of chilitown.

In case you are wondering, no, there is no basis for this rule other than my own personal annoyance.

If you use an alternate forum style and think that means it's a good idea to make posts with lots of colors that are completely unreadable in the normal forum style, I reserve the right to take a steaming dump in your post.
